BEWARE VETERANS – Please watch your finances at this school! You absolutely have to stay on top of them every single semester to ensure that you tell them what classes you are taking. If you do not, you WILL NOT be paid – your housing allowance nor for your classes even though you register for them and they should be tracking what classes veteran students are taking. Do not ever think they will automatically do this after you do it when you initially come to the school and get registered for classes because they will not and you will just be out of your housing allowance. This is NOT a normal practice for GI Bill/VRE approved schools but for whatever reason this school makes the veteran complete a form every single semester, every single class you register for instead of keeping up with the veteran students registered like MOST schools do. Also triple check and vet everything they say with the VA itself because you will most likely be given incorrect information by whoever is doing the VA stuff for the school. Financial Aid and the VA office seem to be on completely separate pages and will require your constant babysitting to ensure you get paid. Be prepared and aware of this additional stress you will have to carry every single semester you are enrolled at this school. I will say the Financial Aid office is on point and knows their stuff. They are fantastic about getting answers if something is wrong... right on the spot and fixing it as soon as they possibly can.
It is the VA office that really needs more than one person to ensure veterans are adequately being taken care of and not left hanging financially when it comes to using their education benefits to provide for their families.
Overall I actually liked Midlands Tech and can tell most of the staff do care for the most part but the VA office just REALLY needs a team of at least two to three people to help veterans be set up for success. There is no way there are as many students and campuses at Midlands Tech and the lack of VA support – there is simply no adequate excuse.
Veterans have to take so much on the chin when it comes to VA education benefits being jacked up at these schools the average staff or faculty member has no clue. I mean imagine going to school for the month and then the day you're supposed to get paid – not getting paid because, "you didn't send in a form saying you were taking classes...? When you're already alerted or completed initial registration and sign up with the VA office upon arrival at Midlands Tech. There is no excuse as to why this school can't provide a better process for tracking veterans’ classes they are registered in and sending that certification to the VA so they can get paid. It's already hard enough managing school while working and providing for a family, veterans should not be made to do your job too. It's evident whoever came up with this process wanted a shortcut to doing their job in supporting the veterans at this school.
Like I said, the school has good points but as a veteran student, be aware that the VA support system here desperately needs an overhaul to prevent undue hardship for veteran students. Until that changes, veterans must stay vigilant each term. Hopefully the school takes this review seriously, otherwise veterans will eventually start reporting you to the VA and you won't get any VA funding since ensuring veterans are taken care of...
Read moreEven 1 star is generous in rating my experience at MTC. They have deleted dozens of negative reviews from google about them losing peoples transcripts(Mine were lost twice). Upon enrollment at MTC your academic advisor and most professors will tell you right out of the gate that BIO 210 and 211 have an 80% fail rate and that almost everyone will fail the class the first time, which is odd that a college would even tell you that to begin with. But if you are lucky enough through the insanely long admission process, It will most likely be right before classes start so that they can charge you $50 late registration fee and pretty much all classes will be full or near full leaving you with a horrible schedule to work your life around. My advice if you live in the Columbia area is to just make the drive down to OC Tech in Orangeburg, you will thank me later. Avoid this college...
Read moreThey are definitely passionate about promoting their mission and whatnot but the overall quality of this college is not the best. A lot of the professors are difficult to get in touch with and bad at explaining things to people who have never learned it before. The general attitude of people around campus is bad and it is hard to make friends. The online programs that they use to keep records, sign up for classes, manage online classes, etc all SUCK and are difficult to use. On the upside, the financial aid is plentiful and there are a lot of conveniences around campus such as free coffee, study areas, and eating areas. Midlands Tech is a great opportunity to get ahead if you don't have a lot of money but don't expect a fun, social college experience and don't expect anything great in terms of education quality. You get what you pay...
