My family and friends rented 110 Penland Pt Drive in Hayesville, NC on Lake Chatuge. The listing was deceptive in several aspects, both in the description provided by Great Mountain Cabin Rentals as well as the photos for the listing (e.g. no easily accessible lake access, unable to dock a boat there, back yard featured in photos not including 6 no trespassing signs, etc.). We were harassed by the neighbors shortly after arrival as the property line was not well delineated and google maps brought us to the wrong side of the house when we arrived. We were verbally threatened with our children present and ultimately the police were called to handle the dispute. While we were able to sort things with the police with the RV campground manager present, it was clear during the remaining of the stay that there was some kind of ongoing land battle that we, by renting, were unknowingly pulled into the middle of. We quickly tried to find alternative accommodations but were unsuccessful in changing given the last-minute nature of it being a holiday weekend and the owners through Great Mountain Cabin Rental offered us less than a third of money we paid as a refund. Ultimately, we had to leave the property to safely access the lake.
The manager at Great Mountain Cabin Rentals initially told us when we called them after arrival to report issues that this was an ongoing problem with the neighbors as they were trying to acquire the rental property but the owners who were unwilling to sell. However, she quickly changed course when we requested a refund stating there had never been any issues in the past with this rental. We knew this to be untrue as the property manager for the RV campground stated otherwise and seemed to agree that the listing was intentionally deceptive. I was stressed the entire time, being unable to change location and having young children present had me constantly worrying if the belligerent neighbors would return and again verbally accost us or worse.
Families, especially those with young children, SHOULD NOT rent this place. The house itself is nice and updated and if you plan on spending time only inside then it should not be an issue. We speculate that the limited reviews on this particular property are likely from strategic deletion of the honest reviews left by customers that have likely been put in the same position as us. We hope either the owners settle their disputes with their immediate neighbors or they put up some VERY HIGH fencing and update their listing photos and information honestly for...
Read moreAre you looking far a quiet mountain getaway with very scenic surroundings and a river to sit by? IF that's what you are looking for, then consider this Riverside Retreat the we call the "Red Plaid Cabin". It's near Murphy, NC and close to waterfalls, hiking trails, river walks, lakes and mountains.
If you use Waze or other GPS to Navigate there, you will exit HWY 60 onto a narrow rough road that leads into a maintained gravel road leading to the cabin. the cabin is located about 2 miles from the highway and you may get the initial idea that you have made a wrong turn. Fear not, this is actually a feature that gives you the peaceful quiet only found in the "woods". Close to the end of the road you will see the first home on your left and then another etc. I think there are only 7+/- homes/cabins in this small development. there is an ample driveway to the cabin and you will see the Red Door you saw in the description picture in the rental add.
Oh and the rental agency was top notch with sending confirmations, info and arrival instructions. They made contact to see how things were and if we needed anything. Very quick responses to any inquiries. We were very pleased with that experience.
Now about the cabin. It is very clean and cozy. Washer and dryer and a kitchen so well equipped that you could fix a Thanksgiving dinner with the more than adequate utensils and appliances. Not a large kitchen, but big enough. From the kitchen you have a round table with 4 chairs, then the nice Red and Black plaid carpet (hence our nickname) a 3 seat leather couch and a leather easy chair, coffee table and large HDTV, stone fireplace and a view of the large covered porch and river. that big covered porch had a large picnic style table and 3 burner propane grill with side burner. Some Adirondack stack chairs that we took to the firepit near the river. Great place to relax and enjoy the view and nature.
Bedroom one had a comfortable King bed with a Red and Black (yep) comforter. Another HDTV and full bath. We didn't use the second bedroom with the 2 single beds. Another full bath was adjacent to that bedroom.
Cozy, clean and welcoming place to enjoy. We ventured out each day and enjoyed the area. We can definitely endorse the rental and their agency. If you want to be near the "action", rent a hotel. If you want a retreat and comfortable beautiful place,...
Read moreThis place is 😎 Awesome! We went up for a short trip over Labor Day weekend and wish we could of stayed longer. The trip up to the cabin at first was something we had to get use too, first we took the paved road then found the gravel road the next day when we left, we like the gravel road much better it's a little bumpy but once you drive it it's not bad. The cabin is Beautiful ❤️ and loved the outlook on the porch spent most of our time there. You can see some of the mountains to the left, we saw three little deer one night in the yard down below which was neat to see. The beds were comfy, loved that there was a bathroom to each bedroom and the hot tub was wonderful on our aching bodies. Cooked every day and loved the kitchen and the two coffee makers one keriug and one a regular pot for coffee. We just enjoyed everything from the reservation to our check out process, they stay in touch with you either text or call very responsive. Everything was just Wonderful 😊 Thank you, would definitely be returning. Love the town of Murphy too lots to do. Some things we did were the railroad, swinging bridge and scenic drives. Went to the farmers market downtown Murphy, wanted to do tubing but water was too low. Ate at Chevelle's which is a neat little bar/restaurant good food. There were four of us with a handicap person with us and he did awesome in this cabin! Thank you so much for everything! We see you...
