"Disappointing." First, to access, one must take exit ramp off hiway, turn left and go over the overpass and make 2 more left turns to reach entry/parking. No big deal, usually, as probably not even a mile to get to it. BUT, it was after dark, pavement wet but not raining, and Welcome Center shut down for night. Also usually not a problem, but when the Men's restroom is closed, door locked, "for cleaning," that became more problematic as 10 min. then 15, then 20 min. elapsed with no sign of opening up. Being patient I used the time to walk the "big dog" in the generous areas for pets away from parking/tables. Still no open restroom. No choice but to use a darker part of the pet area. Walking back to vehicle I see a water fountain and a stainless steel pet watering bowl atop it. Thinking "how convenient" until I tried to fill bowl and no water to fountain, nor at the fountain 20ft across the parking area (20 ft. closer to main building), and doubting water at fointain 50-60 ft. Back across road and further from main building-Eureka! A fountain supplied with water! So with dog's thirst quenched, back to truck to move on. That's when I realized the entire rest area's paved surfaced layered with damp leaves, a layer of about 1/2 inch very damp soil from Debris and erosion from heavy rainfall. It was Friday evening and easy to determine no maintenance of surfaces for at least a week. Maybe reduced workforce from Covid or Flu? I don't know but disappointed that obviously no contingency plan to present a clean parking area, drinking water plentiful, open and usable restrooms-even after welcome center closed for the day. Not welcoming, not usable-at least for 25 mins., and not hospitable. I hope this was a rare failure in not putting our best foot forward...being the "Hospitality...
Read moreWe stopped in to use the restroom and replace our outdated Mississippi state map. We were surprised it was closed with a sign on the door reporting it wouldn't reopen until January 2. While disappointed we couldn't get a map I was relieved the restrooms were still open. And happier still to realize maps were conveniently available left there and some kind state employee have even left free copies of a Mississippi tourist magazine on the washstand counter. Thank you for your consideration and I was glad you got a little time off...
