If you are looking on Google and shopping Creeper Trail outfitters, etc. You need to stop and read this!
My wife, my two sons (9 and 12), and Ibooked a trip for last Saturday afternoon. We’ve been biking a lot this summer (Mackinac, UP, lots of rails to trails in NC, MI) like a lot of families and this (Creeper) is something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time. So - as we’ve been traveling easily and with success thus far with our own bikes, we chose not to rent bikes from Sundog and only paid the fee for transport. Big mistake!
Approximately a half mile into the trip down, my little guy somehow wrecked his crankset. I replaced the chain in an attempt to continue down the Creeper, but it kept derailing every few minutes. Finally, the chain was so stretched out there was no more helping it. In what can only be ascribed to serendipity, this disaster unfolded within close walking distance to Green Cove Cooperative. That’s another amazing group of people with an excellent beer selection and surprisingly awesome selection of gear. Stop there and spend some money. At any rate, Green Cove offers free WiFi which allowed me to call Sundog and beg for help getting off the mountain.
Unbelievably, Sundog sent a transport up (30 minutes up the mountain) with a rental bike for my 9 year old. The bike they brought was much nicer than any we had ourselves. Well - this act of generosity allowed us to sail down the trail. The involuntary elations of pure freedom from my two boys hauling down that mountain is something I will never forget and I doubt they will either. When we got down, I went into Sundog and demanded I be charged for the rental and gas and time and they absolutely refused. It almost made me feel bad they were so generous.
These are the types of folks you want to give your money to on the Creeper and in business generally. They will take care of you and your family and be happy to do so. I can’t tell you what a joy it was for me to deal with such wonderful people - especially right now when everything seems so dire.
It didn’t hurt they were playing Tyler...
Read moreA tale of two bike shops. As we planned our trip to Damascus to go down to creeper Trail, we knew we could not Make a shuttle until 3 o’clock as we were going to bike down from Whitetop. I only needed a shuttle for my wife to go back up since I was going to make the trip all the way to Abingdon and she would pick me up. At first we filled out an online reservation with Bicycle Junction only to have them call us and tell us that she was the only customer so they would not make money and could not drive us on that day even though they advertised the time as available for shuttle .
So we called Sundog and ask them if they could give us a reservation for that afternoon and they said of course. And it did not matter the number. So on the next day we drove up to Whitetop and Biked down to Damascus. As it was their last shuttle at 3:40, it appeared that my wife would be the only person on the shuttle but that did not matter to them and they absolutely said they would give her a ride back up no problem. Everyone at Sundog was super friendly and super helpful and nothing was in convenient for them. The service was stellar.
If you need a shuttle for a bike or a shuttle alone out of Damascus, Sundog is the one to use as they will make anything happen for you and they were awesome...
Read moreMy wife and I rented bikes today 11/3/18. We arrived early and immediately were greeted and walked through the check in process. The fitters found us perfect bikes in no time. Because our group was all there and early we didn't wait around. We got going 20 minutes ahead of schedule. Huge plus for me, (If we are ready why aren't you). But wait, my mother came with us to Damascus but wasn't comfortable doing the ride, but wanted to come with us to the drop off point. Yes, they charged us for her to ride up to the top of the trail head with our group, not a problem. However, once we were dropped off, the gentlemen that drove us proceeded to take my mother on an hour and a half long site seeing tour the entire way back down the mountain. My mother was blown away by his kindness, generosity and the sites along the way. I don't think that my mothers request to ride up the mountain and back down was anything they had ever experienced but they made my Mother's Day doing it. Sundog Outfitters truly showed my mom unbelievable hospitality and for that you have gained a customer and friend for life. Plus our bikes were...
