North YMCA — Local services in Davenport

I recently returned to the North YMCA after about five years and was really impressed with the updated equipment. The facility itself looks great and I was excited to start working out here again.

Unfortunately, our experience with the childcare was very disappointing. According to the posted schedule, childcare was supposed to be open until 11:30 am. We pay an extra fee for our daughter to attend the Y daycare. We arrived at the gym at 9:10, but the childcare was closed by 9:40. There were three staff members on duty, yet none of them were able to keep the childcare open. Because of this, my wife had to leave with our 6-year-old, and neither she nor I got the workout we had planned.

I spoke with two front desk staff members, and while they apologized, neither was willing to reopen childcare. Since we recently moved closer to this YMCA, we were really hoping to make this our regular gym, but this left us wondering if this type of early closing is a common occurrence.

Signed up for membership Tuesday. It's Wednesday and I am going in tomorrow to cancel it! The groups of kids allowed to hang out in the front lobby are out of control, loud, confrontational, and mock people going in and out of the facility including myself and my son! The staff says NOTHING 95% of the time and the other 5% they say something to the tone of "settle down guys" or "knock it off" only to have them right back at it 30 seconds later. For this YMCA to be any larger City it appeared as if it were in a very small town with very little money to sustain it. The facility overall was very tiny the weights and the cardio machines were all on top of each other in one room. A few of the treadmills definitely need some repair. I was visiting from out of town on a one-day trip and post-workout I asked where the towels were and was told they do not provide towel service. So I improvised and dried off with paper towels.
