I have been working with the Elgin location for several years now, mostly over the phone for the business but every now and then would stop in the shop. Mostly working with Mike, though all the staff was always more than willing to help with just general questions about projects, types of leather, options, ideas. Any questions that you ever had they would never hesitate to take the time to help you figure it out. But I tell you they went above and beyond just recently for me, I had my home machine breakdown and in a pinch I ran to the store to get one of the consew T1919. Well upon set up of course it had a few glitches, found out that it's not uncommon for this machine but it seems like everything that I've tried just didn't work. I called up the boys and without hesitation they told me to come on down. Elgin's about an hour and 20 minutes on a good day from where I live and though I do have a candy store much closer than that in milwaukee, true customer service is worth all the Loyalty in the world. I got there they took my machine immediately stopped what they were doing picked it apart figured it out had no problem with me asking questions asking what they think might be the issue why they might be adjusting or whatever Zach was doing he was more than happy to have the patience to teach me as well as fix my machine. And all the while enjoying good conversation with these guys while they were fixing it. You don't find people like these guys much anymore, they truly love and appreciate the craft and respect the Craftsman as well. If this wasn't your Leather...

Nice selection of leather. I believe they have in stock the entire Tandy catalog.
The store is a little hard to find as it is in what looks like an industrial park building. Trust your gps, Google maps or what ever other app you may be using, ot really is there. Look for the sign over the door.
Parts, kits and components are generally organized by part number. The same for dyes and finishes. This took a few moments to get used to, but actually made finding what I was looking for very useful. And the couple of items I didn't find the staff was supper helpful in assusting in helping me locate them. In fact they found it and asked if that was what i was looking for, in a very friendly way and not at all in a condensiding why as you often encounter in retail.
There was a class going on in the back of the store. The instructor seemed engaging, helpful, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. So if you were getting started I would recommend the classes here.
As I started with. If you are into or interested in leather craft this is a...
Read moreFrom the outside, Tandy Leather looks small. Walking into the front door, if looks even smaller. But walk in... it's a really large room, actually! The owner is really friendly and helpful, very knowledgeable, and he gives leather work lessons! The variety of leather working materials is more than sufficient, and quite honestly, a little staggering! There are many varieties of studs, eyelets, snaps, buckles, rings, belt ends, conchos, pre-made bits, kits, books, actual tools, punches, stamps, carving and beveling tools, sewing material and tools, and then the leather!!! Such a variety, including raw, many types of finishes, belt strips, and things I don't even have names for yet! What a find, what a treasure trove! The prices seem quite competitive and/or even with others competing in the market. Leather working classes are offered in a variety of areas and price classes, depending on whether tools and materials are self- or shop-supplied.
We immediately penned an account, night about $100 with of materials and tools, and we intend to become of the somewhat regular visiting customer type. So happy to have discovered...
