Long story, but jest is that Glenn (the owner) is happy to rent you broken equipment, and then threaten to call the cops on you
Not a bad location, or rates, but quite possibly the worst/unprofessional personal experience I have had in the last 10 years. Group of us rented kayaks for 4 hours to head over to Caladesi island. On the way back one started to take on water, and our guy was not able to stay up right any more. He had to swim for a nearby island and eventually got rescued by a bystander on a jetski.
When the rest of the group returned and told the employee working the desk what happened, his exact response was, "Well you better go back and get it or I am going to call the cops!" Seriously, you rent kayaks, and when one has an issue you threaten to call the cops?!?!
Long story, longer, I eventually flagged down a good Samaritan in a boat, and we were able to go retrieve the kayak. Upon finding it, I discovered that the water leak was from a bad repair job on the bottom of the kayak. (you could see where they had use some marine bondo, and the water leaking out through the crack once it was up on the boat).
So now I return to the shop with the defective kayak, and meet Glen the owner. I tell him the story, and ask for a refund for everyone, after being threatened, and a 2 hour ordeal to retrieve his broken property. He says absolutely not, and when I asked him what he thought would be fair, his direct quote was, "how about I don't charge you a late fee, for bringing the boat back 2 hours late." Wow, I can't even think of more unprofessional way to treat a customer, who rented defective equipment, and then retrieved it for you.
We negotiated for awhile, and him and his employee's continued to threaten to call the cops (for some reason), so my group finally called the bluff and called the cops for him. They showed up, and Glenn reluctantly refunded only the guy whose kayak was broken to begin with. Needless to say, the whole experience put a damper on the Mangroves.
Highly recommend kayaking over there, just do anything in your power to rent from somewhere else. Unless, that is if you enjoy dealing with broken equipment, and repeated threats to have the cops...

In reference to the one star reviews... I think it's ridiculous to leave a company bad reviews because of a dispute with the owner, regardless of who was right or wrong. As a neutral third party, I saw the negative reviews and looked into several news articles. It looks like the owner was attempting to keep everyone safe because it would be HIS business and HIS permit effected if someone was hurt, which is completely understandable. The owner of the non profit, on the other hand, seems like she feels she is entitled to do as she pleases just because she works with disabled children. What she does for the kids is great, but she should be more relaxed and understanding when working with other businesses. Not everyone can bend over backwards for her (as much as they want to help autistic kids), especially if it involves going against city ordinances.
If you have a personal problem with the owner, keep that off the review pages. You don't have a problem with the business itself, and people who are looking to simply rent kayaks shouldn't be bombarded with bad reviews because of a dispute between two people. Stooping so low as to potentially hurt business by giving bad reviews is just small. It's the equivalent of a four year old telling their parents that their teacher is mean and bad just because the teacher put them in time out for breaking a rule.

Ā Ā Ā Read moreShame, good business with disrespectful young kid running it- I have never been talked to in such a disrespectful manner. First time there. Did not now know where i going - signage a little lacking and he snips at me about not seeing a sign that said employees only and then directs me to the front of the podium and hands me a flyer and says they are not renting today due to wind....Something along the lines of "why dont you call first" to see if we are renting...just rude condescending treatment - I service over 6000 guest in my business a month and someone on my staff spoke to my guest this way they would not work for me. Wish the owner much success because usually ownership does not want this type of service happening and unfortunately it usually happens behind the owners back. Love mentoring the young associates we bring in but respect cant be taught - its something parents instill from birth on....feel sorry actually for this kid. I dont like leaving good or bad reviews really but when someone is just down right rude and disrespectful - I do because I dont ever complain - i just take my business elsewhere, but this one just got my goat.
Glen...thanks for response i will give you another try....sorry you had to do what you did. I live so close and was trying to decide to buy a kayak and thought i would rent a few times first...i knew you had been there a long time and sent people there before...so i was shocked. Changed post to 5 stars on account you regonized issue, was honest...
