I got a last minute request from our friends that, as I was officiating their wedding (with my wife), would I mind at all wearing a kilt for the occasion?
Now, I've wanted a kilt for years, but it always seemed like an expense that kept it too out of reach. But my friends offered to help in the cost, and, atop of that, sent me the link to USA Kilts where I found the Casual Kilt at a, to me at least, pretty amazing price! I paid a little extra for rush delivery of it because I only had a couple weeks until the big day, but it still managed to arrive with more than enough time to spare.
The casual kilt is probably the perfect "beginner's kilt" (save for maybe a Utilikilt, but those are very different). What impressed me most was that there was still quite a range of Tartans available even in the casual. I found two under my "name" (Scott) to choose from and picked the one I thought looked the nicest. I didn't get any of the accessories, and maybe I should have. The groom and two of the guests all wore kilts (not casual, the next line up) from USA Kilts as well, and having the socks with the flashes and the sporrans, they looked very sharp. But I didn't feel like I was all that dressed down in comparison, and I got a lot of nice compliments on the kilt itself and my chosen Tartan in particular. And since I want to rewear it later on, in more casual settings, the extras would be overkill for most other occasions.
I had a friend measure me for my sizing, and I went for the waist measurement under the belt line. I might have second-guessed myself on that decision when I first tried it on (I do have an ample belly, so I thought it would look better). During the weeding day though, I felt far more comfortable with how I had it placed I think than I would have if it had been higher. And, honestly, that's the best of all: I felt comfortable the whole day. Once the initial shock to the system wore off of wearing something with my legs bare (and trying to remain somewhat modest when sitting down), I never really thought twice about it. The material was very nice, it sat well and securely (the casual uses velcro to fasten. And I wore it with my own belt). It really does feel natural after a bit of wear. My wife liked the look of it enough, I may even start to get requests from her to put it on instead of jeans when we have our days off together.
I just can't say enough nice things about the whole experience, as well as the service and selection from USA Kilts themselves. If I ever have the chance, I would definitely buy from them again (maybe a formal kilt in...
Read moreAs an adoptee, after a DNA test, and knowing my biological birth name, I discovered my significant scottish roots recently. Having always wanted a kilt, at 57, I decided to start investing in a few.
I have ordered several times from them, and have been buying gift certificates under the radar to surprise my wife for our 25th anniversary Vow Renewal.
First off...you have cheaper options out there. So why buy from USA Kilts?
American Made, Scottish Sourced.
I'm a Scottish Canadian immigrant to the United States. I believe in supporting American made, and particularly American small business. I also believe in their choice to only use UK sourced raw products.
Value Added.
Worth its weight in gold! Their YouTube page is invaluable for educating yourself about the products you are buying, as well as a plethora of historical background, and their Facebook page is a great community of like minded people.
For those who don't follow their social media, they exercise a high level of integrity. They focused on educating, and don't push their products as much as they could acceptably do so. Yes, they do talk about their products, but not at the expense of competitors. They will not name names, but give examples for context.
Customer Service.
I had issues with the website a week or so ago, so e-mailed to find out if I could call in an order of swatches. Emma contacted me very quickly, to let me know I can call in and they could sort me out. I called, and spoke to a woman (I forget her name), and she was absolutely great! She was apologetic about my "inconvenience ", and I assured her that, as my "retirement" job is as a manager of a retail store, that I understand "stuff" happens.
We got the order completed, and I expect my package in a few days.
Truthfully, I would feel that if I were to consider buying from someone else, it would feel like I was cheating on them. The only exception is a company out of South Africa who will make a sporran for me, with my (Canadian) regimental cap badge on the cantle, made feom springbok hide.
I hope you find this...
Read moreThe products here are professionally made, they have great quality in their products. This Sporran I bought is a great example, the construction is very durable and they clearly know what they are doing. I actually envy their skill in constructing such great items. I have worked with leather many times before. When you make a lot of crafts you definitely appreciate well made products like that sporran.
KILTS
The kilts are absolutely extravagant. Again the quality is great, in fact I always cringe at sitting down in my kilt because I don't want to fold the pleats, because it looks that nice... I later learned that's not a huge problem with wool. I actually have two modern kilts and one great plaid, as well as flashes and other accessories from this company... I have actually been "kilt high" from my last kilt in my clan colors numerous times now... That's when you can't help from wearing your kilt and other Scottish clothing pieces while blasting Scotland the Brave as you do chores around the house...im very proud!
PRICES AND CUSTOMER SERVICE
When it comes to prices it is very fair if you imagine the amount of work some of these products take, the (again) quality and how professional they look. The customer service is fantastic as well! With my most recent kilt purchase they actually included a good amount of scrap tartan! I can make a lot of things with my colors now, and that blew me away. I have also gotten signed order papers, every one with a written thank you. I also accidentally ordered two sporrans like the one pic below; because, my computer wigged out on me. USA Kilts gladly and quickly reimbursed me within 24 hrs.
This is a great company, their mission to preserve the Scottish culture to the next generations is glorious, and I will continue to support these Celts for the rest of my days. Tapadh leat,...
