I love SIUE! I’ve been studying on and off since 2011- as I’ve taken time off to stay at home with my children. The professors are extremely qualified and intelligent- and work incredibly hard to help everyone learn as much as they can in a semester. In fact the majority of my professors are some of my favorite people. If you go in willing to do the work and learn as much as possible, it’ll happen. The library isn’t expansive but if you need a text someone will help you find it somehow (online, pdf, or loaned from elsewhere). The campus is beautiful and majority of people you will encounter are friendly, kind, and helpful (it’s the second safest campus in Illinois). I spend the majority of my time in Peck hall, and have grown to think of it as a second home.
*The one bane of my existence is parking. I don’t know who to speak to, but I fervently believe that parking should be free. Especially the red pass parking out in the middle of nowhere. If parking lots and campus are half empty due to COVID there shouldn’t be any parking citations! THIS IS THE HILL I WILL DIE ON. If I can find someone willing to hear my grievance on this issue I will cry them a river, write them a declaration, sing them ballads, I will preach manifestos in the quad- 👏🏻quit 👏🏻issuing 👏🏻citations 👏🏻 when 👏🏻 most👏🏻 classes 👏🏻 are 👏🏻 online...
Read moreIf youre a non-traditional student like myself just go somewhere else. The lack of thought for anyone that works or doesnt live on campus is suprising. Everything that goes into these courses, due dates, and "mandatory peer led tutoring" has zero regard for anyone in the working class. Sometimes I will be given a handout and its due in one or two days, and when youre running back and forth from work, school, and trying to balance home life ontop of it it gets frustrating because my schedule is very tight and Im a person that always completes things early. They've incorporated something called "peer led tutoring" into some of the science courses and they're worth between 5 - 7.5% of your grade. This is a thing thats done outside the lecture and the lab with a SI (student instructor). I dont have time for tutoring. I study when I can, sacrificing sleep or in between work and school most of the time. If I have the knowledge and put forth the effort in labs, quizzes, and exams why should I be punished for not attending tutoring? Almost all the the courses have something silly like this that has zero regard for the non-traditional student. Ill leave this one star until something changes. But if you're a non-traditional student like myself just go...
Read moreI earned a Bachelor's degree in Management from SIUE and graduated with the Class of 1989. At that time, SIUE was a school to avoid. It was run by conservatives with obscenely high salaries who couldn't care less about the students or the faculty. If you know how SIUE came to be - eminent domain done by the Mafia - you would certainly go elsewhere. The emphasis of the school's policies and operations focuses on delivering the minimum while pretending to be a genuine institution of higher learning, complete with smiling faces and colorful brochures. Don't be fooled by any of it. Shop around and talk to students who have attended whatever schools you're looking at. Opinions count more than the best...
