We bought two buck stoves, model 94, their largest non catalytic stoves . One came with a surround to insert in the fireplace and one came with legs to set up in the basement. These were the stoves recommended by the store for the size house we are heating with them and they are incredible. It's a very large stone house ... even with the thermostats turned way down, we had electric bills over $700 last winter.
I feel like I've had a reasonable amount of experience cutting and splitting wood, but Doug was a wealth of information as to what to cut, and when to cut it. For the person who hasn't used many cords of firewood, he would be a very valuable resource to chat with.
Doug made sure we had everything we needed first time around, and quoted us the best price we were able to find. The fact is, even if he had just been able to get reasonably close to the best price we could find, Tammie and I were agreed that we wanted to buy from them. They are very nice people to deal with ... which is probably why the same people have been running the same business in the same place for so long.
EDIT:
I'm not sure how many years it has been since we bought these Buck Stoves and posted the review, but we thought we should edit it to follow up, and try to share what we have experienced.
As you can see from the pictures, we have a couple of chimneys on each side of the house, for the living rooms and the basements on each end. On one end, we have an Ashley insert in the living room and a free standing stove made by New England in the basement. We put the new Buck insert in the living room on the other end of the house, and the free standing Buck in the basement (the one with stuff collected on top of it).
The free standing Buck works wonderfully well, but we don't use it ... we bought both because of our experience with the two on the other side. If it's cold, it takes both the Ashley insert and New England stove to heat that side.
We soon learned that we could not use both Buck units at the same time... either one alone does a MUCH better job than both units on the other side.
Moreover, the Bucks are incredibly efficient. Using either one, with temperatures in the low teens down to zero, we can keep their side as warm as we can stand it, with a fraction of the wood consumption, even though both ends of the house are the same size.
To be fair, this is an apples to oranges comparison ... the Ashley insert and the New England stove have served us very well for many years (maybe 20). They work as well as they ever did, and we have an endless supply of oak, ash, hickory, etc., so we have no complaints with them.
At some point, we will replace the Ashley insert with a Buck ... mainly because I like to sleep through the night without having to get up to add wood, and when you cut and split all this wood yourself ... efficiency matters!
I hope our experience is helpful to you.
