Calhan Paint Mines Archeological District — Local services in Falcon

Well worth the visit. The dirt road from Calhan is well maintained and an easy way to approach the mines. We did the overlook first and there is a trail down into the mines from there. There is also a lower parking lot with trails leading into the mines. The first hill I found quite steep and so I did not descend into the mines because it meant coming back over that steep hill. But the overlook gave me great views down into the all the hoo doos and other geological formations. I do wish that they could lessen that steep grade and make the mines accessible...

Allow extra time to get there. Very long dirt roads for miles depending which roads you take. Several trails around and through the paint mines....
