G&E Hocker’s Supermarket — Local services in Fenwick Island

We visit Bethany Beach often during the summer and since Hockers Market on Fred Hudson Rd is the closest to us we shop there. The prices are a bit higher than we are use to but figured this may be typical for a beach town. Earlier this week we were in a hurry and purchased one of their pre-made 12” roast beef sub sandwiches. When we arrived home to eat the sub we found that there was one slice of roast beef on each side of the sub. So when the sub was cut in half there was one slice of roast beef on each half. I called and asked to speak with a manager and he told me this should not have happened and offered me a free sub to replace it. Well today we went to the store to shop and while there we picked up the free sub. We wanted another roast beef sub but were told they were out of roast beef, figures. So we picked up an Italian sub instead. Well we got back home to eat the sub and there was one slice of ham, one slice of salami and one slice of cheese. Summer 2021 was not a good summer at G&E for sure. Your produce dept was shameful. The sweet corn was old, often the tomatoes were rotted and many times there was nothing out on the shelves. The Deli workers have attitude similar to TSA and they act like they are doing you a favor when they toss the cut lunch meat at you over the counter. The only good thing back in this area is some of the pre-made foods are good. The bakery goods are old and often stale. When you compare the baked goods with what Giant has to offer its no comparison. Again very disappointing. The checkers rarely are pleasant and you can tell they just dont want to be there. They must be berated by a nasty supervisor to be this unpleasant. In summary if this is all because "it's hard to find good help"- fire your HR person because GIANT has mastered the art of friendly customer service using locals who seem happy to be there and working at Giant. This is wonderful store some of the people that work there are amazing Mr. Hocker and Mrs. Hocker and their sons are somebody who really cares about their workers. It’s clean well taking care of. They care about their customers, and to work with them was amazing he made you feel very comfortable And let you do your job and if there was something that bothered him, there was no yelling it was speaking quietly and privately if I lived closer to the beach, I would love to go back there. They’re an amazing family to work for and their food is fresh if you want good country food, that’s the place to go, thank you I miss them guys.
