Jay Lively Ice Arena is a single sheet, city run, ice rink. This rink is located on the far north edge of Flagstaff. It has single point access with ample parking, especially when considering the very limited capacity of the 2 rows of bleachers in the rink. The facility appears well run, the ice kept decently well and the locker rooms are very well planned.
When you arrive at this rink as a hockey player, you immediately realize the locker rooms section of the facility must have been an add-on after the rink was built. The built on locker section is attached nicely to the far side of the boards, with the changing rooms, showers and hallway all away from the main area.
The lockers are nice, spacious and well kept. The split shower/washroom facilities between the lockers contain 6-8 shower spots each, and are kept clean. Thankfully, the water temperature works in most shower heads (which can sometimes be a failing of rink facilites).
The ice itself seems maintained well and the staff seems present and attentive, which can again, be a failure at many local rinks.
One oddity that makes little sense is the rink policy of "no outside food", considering there is no consession, store, restaurant or grill inside the facility. Seems like a mindless edict to demand fans not bring in outside food when nothing else is available.
Overall, rink appears good and well managed, and certainly a wonderful asset for the city...
Read moreMy Son has state hockey tournament this weekend at Jay Lively Arena. I was unable to be there so I've been watching remotely via LiveBarn as I often do. Today, last game of tournament and game is locked, asking for a 4 digit privacy code.
LiveBarn explains: "Private sessions, represented by a blue padlock icon, are placed and managed by the venue, often during events they don't wish to broadcast or during events where we don't have the exclusive rights to broadcast. During a Private session, the 'Live' stream and VOD are locked by a 4-digit PIN code. Our teams are not provided with these PIN codes.
My wife is at the game and no one there is able or willing to provide the code. Why have LiveBarn if you're going to lock out parents. I have watched hundreds of games at dozens of different venues and this has...
Read moreI can only speak to public skate. It is very crowded most of the times I can go, but the prices are fantastic and the rental skates in my opinion are decent. I've had my own my skates too but am purely recreational so I'm not comparing them to anything fancy, but their rentals are way nicer than some of what I've experienced in bigger cities. Most of the staff is pretty friendly and seems on top of things, checking on people when they fall and whatnot. I just wish there were a better system for getting people in on the weekends - the man who takes the payments, nice as he is, takes a really long time for each person. Maybe for a reason, I don't know, but sometimes you spend 30 minutes of skate time just standing in a really crowded line with antsy kids. My friends and I started paying all together so it...
