This one star is for the receptionist and volunteers. However, my husband and I went to adopt a puppy 06/7. Everything was fine, everyone was great, we signed the papers and went home to pick up our puppy after his surgery for neutered. Come Monday, two days later, we show up to get our puppy, we went to get him from his kennel since he was still in the shelter pod. When we walked in the kennel had a large pool of blood and vomit, and no one in the shelter pod had any idea. Now, when we told them they were extremely apologetic and she immediately ran to get the vet on site. Well, our puppy and his brother tested positive for parvo. Obviously we were heartbroken for our little guy, and we were still dedicated to this puppy. The shelter informed us they will give him 24 hours of treatment, and if he doesnât respond he will be surrender to a rescue. We asked more about the rescue, to which the vet told us if he were to go to the rescue, we are now longer his adopters. We requested for a hold on him if that were to happen, that way we could pick him up and take him to our own vet. There was a supervisor hold on him, which everyone acknowledged when we called, which was nearly every day. We called Tuesday (06/10) and spoke with Maxy, she said he was doing great and they will be keeping him the ten days to make sure he is cleared of the Parvo. Come Friday, 06/13 we call again for an update, and Jared said he will call us back, but he was still at their shelter and not sent to a rescue. We never got a call back, so this morning Saturday (06/14) I called again to check up on him. I spoke with Nicole (Love her) and she informed us our puppy had actually been picked up by the rescue on Wednesday (06/11), Nicole let us know she will talk to the supervisor on site (Ryan Ellis) and he will call back. At this point, we are beyond upset with the misinformation so we decided to just drive to the shelter again to talk to Ryan in person. Well, when Ryan came in to speak with my husband and I, he only acknowledged my husband until I nearly had to force a handshake for him to acknowledge me. We discussed with Ryan the situation leading up to that moment. Ryan was giving extremely vague information, and not actually acknowledging what had happened. For example, he kept mentioning the rescue picking him up, and I asked him what is the name of the rescue, he didnât answer. He mentions it again when he says, âWell the dog was picked up Wednesday.â Thanks idiot, we are fully aware, thatâs why we are here. Then I have to ask AGAIN the name of the shelter, and he gives me their name with much annoyance. After that, I asked him why was the puppy not tested at all before we adopted him. Ryan then replies in a EXTREMELY condescending tone, âSo you want us to test every dog here for parvo? Do you know within 24 hours parvo can show up?â as if I have never heard if I had no idea, basically âmansplainingâ it. To which I let him know, I am fully aware of what parvo is and how to keep a dog healthy. After that, I was already pissed for him talking to me that way, after finding out we just lost our puppy. So I excused myself, âIâm going outside before I lose my shit.â and my husband stayed in to speak with him. I ended up coming back in a minute later after finding the rescue online and told my husband we are going to talk to them instead. My husband then tells me once we sat in the car that Ryan asked him to leave, now if youâre asking why Ryan asked my calm husband to leave, itâs because my husband KINDLY told Ryan that he didnât need to speak to me the way he did. So, Ryan is a little girl and cannot take a man telling him to not treat or speak to women the way he did.
Ryan Ellis is a misogynist, unprofessional, douche bag. Everyone else is fine, Nicole gets a special shoutout for being the most honest and...
Read moreLast Sunday we decided to go visit the shelter to see what dogs did not get adopted, fostered, or rescued from the 1 Year Anniversary event the day before. Also, they were one of very few shelters open in DFW on a Sunday! The facility is very clean and well maintained. We saw lots of dogs out in the play yards and the kennel buildings we visited had decent size kennels for the dogs. It was hard walking through though, so many dogs barking and looking at us with sad eyes. They do provide intake info on the outside of most dog kennels and it made it easier to see the temperament of the dogs. But we did see lots of sweet faces sitting in kennels barking so loudly because they just wanted to go for walks and play outside! They all look like they wanted to cuddle and go home with somebody. It was not easy to walk by without wanting to pet and give much needed TLC to each and every one of the dogs! We thankfully came across a beautiful Husky during our visit that was so quiet and calm we had to find out more about him! We found a nearby staff member and he was very kind and helpful with our request to walk him around and get a closer look at him! He stole our heart and we decided to foster to adopt him! We went up to the front office and arranged everything, application was online and fairly simple to fill out! We were told to come back the next day to pick him up once his neutering was complete. Aside from the lack of communication via phone calls I had that next day trying to get ahold of someone at the front desk, no direct number to the shelter unfortunately. Which was a let down because I can see how lack of phone communication could deter someone from wanting to visit or ask adoption/foster related questions. But picking him up the next day did go fairly smoothly. We had to wait a bit in the medical building before we were able to get help but we were so excited to pick up our new foster that we didn't mind. The staff in the medical building weren't super friendly but I get why, they have to do a lot with these abused, neglected, and injured animals on a daily basis. I did not take it personally, they also couldn't provide a medical cone for our newly neutered dog. We had no problem stopping at PetSmart to pick one up for him but I was curious how that works for people who want to foster but don't have the extra funds for things that the animal may need while in their care. We did ask for a bag of food since he was already eating a certain brand. After bringing him into our home we realized quickly he was going to be a great dog for us and I just had to email the shelter and let them know we were going to adopt him. It was one quick phone call and a couple pages to read then sign. He was officially ours! We wanted to give the shelter a donation since they waived the adoption fee, we were told to be sure to donate through "Cowtown Friends of Fort Worth Animal Care and Control" and not just the Fort Worth City website, so we are sure the donation goes to the shelter and not just the city in general. That was helpful to find out! I highly recommend this facility to anyone looking to foster, adopt, and or volunteer! Please consider helping this shelter any way you can, even bringing regular donations of animal items to the shelter makes a difference! Get involved, follow them on social media, and keep sharing about all the animals looking for homes of their own! Shelters are way over capacity and need our help!!! Please consider doing your part as a good human who wants the best for these resilient animals in...
Read moreI hardly ever write reviews. But this one calls for it. This would be a 1 star review, except for the fact that the facility is clean. However, do not let that deceive you. My husband and I adopted a husky from this shelter on 8/15/24. We originally wanted her on 8/5 but she was not spayed yet, so we waited patiently. The 15th finally came around and we went to go pick up the new addition to our family. They said she had just had the surgery that morning and would probably be a little loopy and may not eat (to be expected).
I, as a responsible pet owner, wanted to make sure I was on the same page regarding her vaccinations since they said they completed them. They told us she was put on a 6 month dose of flea/tick medication, and heart worm preventative since she was negative. They said the dose was given on 7/15/24. Exactly one month from the date we picked her up. I double checked with them it was for 6 months, they said yes. WRONG. It was ONE dose of the medication give once a month for 6 months. Our new baby came home with ticks and to top it off she also had tapeworms that we discovered the morning after we got her.
Now, I feel like if you tell me she is heart worm negative, that that should also mean you checked for intestinal parasites as well. Also, wrong. To wrap things up quickly, in the 5 days that we have had her we have had to spend over $400 on vet bills due to tapeworms, an upper respiratory infection (HORRIBLE cough with phlegm), a skin infection - where her hair falls off in CHUNKS (not just your typical shedding), lab work, X-rays, antibiotics, and preventative medicine for fleas/ticks, and heart worms. Not to mention she refused to eat for the first 4 days we had her. She would show interest in our food, but would not eat the food the shelter sent home with us. We tried adding different salt free broths. Nothing. Peanut butter? Nope đ. Boiled chicken? Threw it up within 2 minutes of eating. After going to the vet we now have to slowly hand feed her boiled chicken (and sneak her antibiotics in it) for the next two weeks until all of her labs come back clear, because she will not eat otherwise. Our poor baby is so sick.
While we love our Layla girl and do not mind doing what it takes to care for her since we committed to adopting her. We do feel this is stuff that should have been taken care of before we got her. They should have done a second dose of flea/tick and heart worm medicine before we left since it expired the same day we got her. Her tapeworms should have been caught considering they âclaimâ to have a vet do a daily regular check of the animals. And as a courtesy to the dogs at least, bathe them right before your spayed/neuter them because you cannot bathe them for 2 weeks after the surgery so the stitches heal and dissolve on their own. Our poor girl is sooo itchy and stinky and all we can do is brush her and wipe her down for the next two weeks. Thatâs not fair to them.
Long story short, make sure your new baby is 100% ready to go before you take them home so you are not left with a big bill that should have been covered as just basic care (that THEY...
