I've shopped with town talk almost 30 years. They've been my go to even with the prices rising. I've never had a complaint other than the occasional item being old or out of date. I'm in town talk two or three times per week give or take so you could say that I'm a regular. I have a family of 7 so we have a nice size grocery bill with them each time we go. Today happened to be very frustrating. Their day was winding down so there weren't many customers as I walked in. However, there were a lot of female customers checking out at the front where I was. I step in and notice immediately the vitamins and supplements in a basket along the wall. I pick through them for maybe 3 minutes when a young bagger walks up to me seemingly agitated. He spoke very sternly and said, "Hey! You're gonna have to leave that backpack in the front." Well, normally I'm a very cooperative person, but his tone did not sit well with me. I had to look at him for a few seconds. Then, I looked around at the other bags and purses of the ladies around me. Their bags were comparably sized to my bag. Mine just had back straps. I told him that the bag was my purse and I would not leave it at the front for someone to potentially rifle through. The combination of his tone and allowing women with comparably sized bags(purses) to keep theirs, gave me an awful feeling in the pit of my stomach. Not to mention, I've shopped with this same bag 2 times in this same week. That was my third time being there this week. I wished those who didn't want to approach me, that sent the young bagger to me, sent someone more professional. His tone was very accusatory. Sadly, after experiencing that feeling, I will not be returning. I would never take something that I could not purchase. I know they can't determine everyone's intent, but that was very condescending; So much so that I had to ask for a manager. The manager bumbled to the front and shrugged his shoulders. "That's the rules," he said, after I told him how I was approached. I opened my bag and told him that if there was something I wanted, I had money to pay for it. My bag was a bag just like the other ladies in the store. I didn't know that I would be profiled for having back straps on my purse. Goodbye Town Talk on Beach St. My family will shop...
Read moreTo start off, I am a transmasculine individual and am just starting getting comfortable with myself and dressing and presenting the way i want. I have been to this location a few times and had never had any problems. They always have really great products for really great prices. Normally I shop with my mom, but today i decided to go by myself. I have a lot of anxiety so this was very nerve racking. I went and did all my shopping and got a ton of amazing finds, when I went to check out, I chose the line of a cashier that I've been through once before . The last time I was with my mom and was nervous because I was still using my old pronouns and name. So I didn't really talk a lot even though he was trying to start a conversation. Today because I was by myself and yesterday was my birthday I was feeling really confident and out of my shell. I walked up to his lane (I can't remember his name but I think it was David or Daniel. He's very talkative and has lots of tattoos and is always pretty smiley.) and right as i walked up, even though it wasn't my turn yet, he immediately complimented my shirt, which for me is a big deal because its new and I feel really confident and comfortable in. So him noticing and liking it really boosted my self esteem. Then he started asking me questions once it was my turn and trying to get to know me. He asked me my name, and I froze because I had never told someone my chosen name before and I couldn't decide to say my birth name or chosen. I was feeling great and decided to share my chosen name. He then told me his name (I feel so bad for forgetting but I was so nervous) and gave me a fistbump. The whole time we talked he was very neutral when speaking to me. This is Texas, so everyone calls me ma'am. He didn't not once. It was a huge deal for me and made me feel really good about myself. And the whole time he was talking he was just super nice and had a lot of cool things to share as well. Want to say thank you to him for making me feel comfortable while shopping and thank you to the company for hiring him. I for sure recommend shopping here and going through his line. Will continue to shop...
Read moreI was excited to go here again after not having been for about 3-4 years. It's an hour from my home but they have a great sale on Saturdays for produce. Today was a day that we did not have anything planned in the morning so we decided to come and check it out. We spent an hour and half in the store - an hour of which was going through the dry goods part of the store. I had NO IDEA that we were actually "in line" to check out. There were isles roped off so you were required to go through each isle even if you weren't purchasing anything. Once you got out of the isles that were roped off, there were 3 additional isles to look through of dry goods. We looked through those and went back to the frozen section to grab a couple of things since it was closer to us leaving. I originally did not get the items since I wanted to look at dry goods first. Again, I live an hour away so getting the frozen goods last is important to me. We get into line and the woman in front of us is asked to get out of line since she didn't wait in the correct "line." This is when we find out that because we shopped for more items, we now had to get BACK into the line we already waited an hour in while shopping through. There was a security guard who was telling us this information. She was very kind and understood that it did not make much sense. I'm sure to people who go here weekly and understand the process, this is no big deal. There is one sign very high up that apparently says "line starts here" on the grocery side but since I was looking on either side of the isle at products, I missed it. No one said anything to me when I got "out of line" either although there was an employee standing by. We were told that if we wanted our cart of products, we had to wait again. We decided it was best for us to abandon the cart and just call it a loss for the 3.5 hours of our day that was wasted. If this process changed or is better communicated, maybe we will return but my time is money and the "savings" weren't even that great for non expired items. The best deals were for things that expired...
