I want to give CaveCreek Canyon so many stars because it is beautiful! However please do not trust the volunteers at the visitor center they do not know what they’re talking about with the trails. The first thing that happened when I walked in is the woman in there pointed out the fact that I am slightly disabled… Who does that? I hike to FORGET that. Thanks. Second of all when I told them I could hike 7 miles and they did not believe me and put me on a trail that you could not go past 3.7 without almost getting lost or hurt which is what happened yet they told me I could hike on it for miles and miles. This trail needs a lot of work. Being Southfork number 243. Also, if you’re going to recommend a trail to someone whom you’ve already pointed out is ( in your eyes) extremely disabled why would you put them on a trail with 17 river crossings just in the first 4 miles. While the people in the visitor center seem to know what they’re talking about, it is clear they don’t hike the trails and aren’t reliable resources.

If you've not driven through Cave Creek Canyon you are missing one of the most picturesque places in Arizona. The volunteers at the Visitor Center are so helpful. There are trails and winding roads. Note - that most trails and roads are pretty much only passable with 4x4. It is a rugged and remote area. There are several campgrounds, in the little town of Portal there is a cafe, lodge, and great views, but the closest fuel stop is in Animas, NM, so come prepared and you will have an amazing time.

Cave Creek Visitor Info Center is the first place you will want to stop at to find the best birding or hiking spots around the area. The staff's helpfulness and generosity with their time and knowledge are commendable, even when faced with "stupid" questions (a skill in which I excel). They provided us with maps of walks and hikes accompanied by handwritten notes, meticulously detailing key sites and trail sections to watch out for during our exploration. I was so grateful for their guidance that I made a donation to their foundation. It was totally worth it for all the info...
