A must when visiting Colorado- it has its drawbacks but is worth it. I did this once in 2017 with my whole family and the train did have some “technical issues” that they addressed at the top of the mountain while we were dismissed to eat/shop/sightsee. We had another 15mins to our break because of it, but the ride back down had no issues.

That being said, the experience was enjoyable enough that I decided to go again this year with my husband. Everything has been redone since 2017 and is much nicer although the train seats are pretty cramped. About 2 hours before our assigned arrival time, we did get a text that due to some difficulties our start time was delayed 30min. No biggie. Once we got there, we all got in our seats and then they announced that they were having troubles and we would need to move over to the other train (they have 2) which I know further pushed back the start time for the next group.

The views were BEAUTIFUL and as I decided between a 3 or 4 star it’s what really made the difference. You see lakes, the staff tells you what monuments you’re passing and points out specific rocks and points of interest… unfortunately it was snowy when we got to the top and there was not much visibility, but it was still enjoyable, and that is out of the Pikes Peak Cogs control.

If you haven’t done it, I’d highly recommend although I would also recommend planning a lot of filler time around it in case something happens. We misjudged how long it would take, and we’re 3.5 hours past what we paid for for parking. (No ticket thankfully) Also, bring a lot of water to help with...

I'll keep it short: This experience was quite a disappointment for me, and I can't understand the extremely high ratings. For the first 40 minutes, the train only passes through forests and rocks with no notable views. Only after this time does a view of the valley open up on the left side in the direction of travel. Unfortunately, I was unlucky enough to be seated on the right side. Since you’re not allowed to change seats during the journey, I barely had the chance to see anything of the scenery.

At the top of the mountain, you only have about half an hour to do anything. Much of that time might be taken up by a trip to the restroom or another short activity. I had hoped to sit on the other side for the return journey to get a better view, but that wasn’t the case. The train goes back exactly the same way it came up. This means that if you’re seated on the right side, you’re simply out of luck. It seems the organizer doesn’t care whether you get to see anything or not. A seat rotation to balance the experience would be a fair solution, but it’s not offered here.

At the summit, I also felt dizzy due to the altitude, and it was extremely cold, even though it was very warm down in the valley. Overall, I can’t say the view was particularly impressive either. Yes, you’re high up, but there’s nothing truly spectacular about the landscape that would justify the trip.
