I feel like this needs to be said- I booked a 1.5 hour private ride for 5 people, 3 of which had no experience on horses at all. I spoke on the phone before I booked and was told there was going to be an âintroductionâ for beginners to get them comfortable before going on the trail. Which ultimately led me to spend over 1000 dollars on this ride that was boasting a great view and a high end experience. I understand I come from a biased place, because I have a lifetime of experience on horses, and I expect a level of safety when putting green children on 1200 pound animals that Iâve never met. I explained to one of the wranglers âMiaâ that the kids had no experience and if she hadnât planned on giving them a true tutorial on how to steer and safely operate a horse, I asked if I could. She was quite rude and assured me that her 30 second visual aid would suffice just fine. All that aside, this is a dude ranch situation, not a lesson pen, I digress. I was put in a saddle with stirrups I couldnât reach (Iâm 5â2) and I was told âthatâs the highest they goâ and was sent out with basically no stirrups. Luckily, I have been riding all my life and have no problem sitting safely on a horse with no stirrups, but I have deep concerns about beginners being sent out with no stirrups. Certainly a saddle change wouldâve sufficed-(especially for over a grand) Weâre out on the trail now, the horse behind me was breathing heavily after the first 5 minutes, this was an older horse, and he sounded like a freight train the entire time, we could tell he was in pain. The horse one of the kids was on could hardly keep his weight under him going down the switchbacks, because his back legs were arthritic and stiff, clearly in pain. Lastly, I went into this with concerns that the kids wouldnât know what to do in an emergency or if a horse ran off on them, thatâs why I wanted them to at least get a run down on steering (they did not get that). So when one of the kidsâ horses walked off the trail and started going to the beat of his own drum, understandably, that little girl was petrified and didnât know what to do but panic. The wrangler who is supposed to be knowledgeable and aware, was nowhere to be seen to help her if things really did go terribly wrong. Yes, there is always inherent risk getting on a horse, BUT putting people that donât know what their doing on horses that are ancient and in pain, is negligent, and will not hold up in a courtroom. These two young girls (that were the only people there) are probably very kind and sweet, but it seemed to me like they lack the experience that is needed to take groups of inexperienced people on trails. You always get older horses and safety concerns with these type things, but in my professional opinion, as someone who has worked with inexperienced and experienced people on the back of a horse, this was lazy, and an absolute ripoff for over 1300 bucks. The views were non-existent, the horses were winded and arthritic, and the wranglers were pretty darn unhelpful. I was trusted with someone elseâs money to buy them a great experience, and I...
Read moreI am very disappointed with the customer service at Rocky Mountain Outfitters Horseback riding.
I had booked a ride for Saturday afternoon and received a confirmation email at 2 PM on Friday night. However, I received a call cancelling my booking at 6 PM. 4 hours after I received confirmation, and LESS THAN 24 HOURS BEFORE THE ORIGINAL BOOKING TIME.
There was never any mention that the trail might not be open for my Saturday booking. I was never sent any sort of notice or warning that the ride was pending on the trail being cleared. Because I had paid for the ride and received several confirma emails, I had no thought that the trail was closed.
I had a valentines date planned. We both cleared our schedules to be able to make it, and I was planning on surprising her with horseback riding. Because the ride was cancelled last minute and I had no inclination that the trail wasnât open, I was unable to make a backup plan for my date.
This is very very poor business, and super stressful and disappointing.
I completely understand prioritizing the safety of your animals and crew. That is not at all my frustration. My main complaint is that I received a confirmation email less than 24 hours before the ride was scheduled to begin. In my mind, a confirmation means that things are good to go and the plan can be solidified.
Additionally, I never received a notice earlier in the week that my ride was pending the trail being open. My booking never made any mention of that. This feels like a major lack of communication. If I knew your trail was only a 50-50 shot at being open, I could have made a backup plan, but I had no idea that was the case. My frustration is in the lack of transparency and communication, not in the fact that conditions didnât permit a ride.
I would recommend taking your business to another horseback riding service that checks their trails and notified customers of the status of that trail with ample time to change their plans. Very expensive ride for so little...
