This is the best place to stop to see the salt flats. There are several parking spots and they also have porta potty restrooms here too. The best time to see the salt flats is at sunrise or sunset, but if you come in the middle of the day it's still pretty interesting. The view is really nice from here - you can walk right out onto the salt flats and walk for as long as you'd like. We brought our dog and she had a great time running with us on the salt flats yesterday morning. You don't need to walk very far to be able to see the salt flats in great, somewhat untouched condition. Everyone has a great view and there wasn't any overlap. I'd say most people spent somewhere between 5 mins and 15 mins at this spot.
One thing I'd mention is to bring coffee and snacks with you if you're going to drive to this location. It's in the middle of nowhere and the road is very flat and boring to get there. There are even signs that warn against drowsy driving on I-80. Bring snacks and coffee to keep yourself awake and alert because getting into an accident is never a fun time. This location is about 1.5 hours from SLC, but there's rarely traffic on this...
Read moreOne place you should visit when to Salt Lake City would be Salt Lake Flats :) Visited the place in Jan 2017 but the place was in a solid state then with salt floating in liquid form. Visited again in June 2018 to witness the beauty of Salt Lake Flats. It was windy at 50mph winds which made us think for a moment to get out of the car. Took few minutes and drove the car into the salt lake and could park there, got down and had a great fun time withnessing the beauty of the nature. Stayed till sunset. This being a rest area you would find very little space to sit outside and got few restrooms. The vending machines are locked and not sure if they are in use anymore. If you are visiting the place and plan to stay for few hours(on a good day), carry some food and water! And to return you might have to go 10+ miles all over to Wendover since there is no U-turn anywhere near!! Good...
Read moreThat rest stop was something else…flat white ground stretching forever, almost like standing on another planet. I did the dumb thing and tasted the salt (yeah, gross) and it was exactly what you’d think—straight salt. The bathrooms were shut down for renovations so I can’t say much there, but honestly, nobody seemed to care.
It was packed when I pulled in, but not in a bad way. Folks were hanging around, taking pictures, walking out on the flats, and just enjoying the weirdness of it all. A couple stands were set up selling little things, adding to the scene. The whole vibe was laid back, everyone just chilling and soaking it in.
If you’re driving through, it’s worth pulling over. Perfect place to stretch your legs, snap a few photos, and say you stood in the middle of that wild white nothing. It’s not your average rest stop,...
