This place is the only game in town. Literally. There used to be other small grocery stores nearby in Branchville, but they died a slow death. Now it's Dales or a 40-minute round trip into Newton.
Dales has all your basic staples, and if you're missing an ingredient for a cooking project, you can probably find it here, or a passable substitute. They also have a small selection of produce... but the produce are of good quality.
Their dairy department even has some organic options, which is terrific to see. But that's about the extent of their catering to health-conscious customers.
They renovated recently and apparently spent all their money expanding their terrible deli, so that now it's a large terrible deli instead of a small one. All of Dale's prepared foods are awful. Too fatty, too much breading, too much sauce, poorly prepared, poorly conceived... but they know their customers. Once again, Sussex County residents reward terrible food with a steady stream of cash.
Their frozen food selection is bad. They've got some ice cream but nothing worth mentioning.
They have some basic over the counter meds and toiletries, but the selection is very, very sparse.
They have a bunch of conventionally farmed meats here... I would only ever buy meat from Dales as a last resort. They also have fish, but I can't imagine ever buying that.
Dales carries precisely zero gourmet items. Despite being the only grocery store serving an entire town, they show no interest in catering to people who want quality goods. It makes sense, since this entire county seems to have no interest fine dining...

This is not the first time I've ordered food from the deli that was disappointing and unappetizing. It will be the last though, unless they start training the youngsters how to make food properly and what is and isn't acceptable to hand off to a customer. You would think that if it's not something they would accept as a customer, why would they think it's okay to serve to someone else. For what it's worth I have had some 5 star quality food from there, but recently it's gone downhill. The store itself is great for last minute necessities, a little pricey, but instead of traveling to town is convenience...
Read moreStop by and got some ambrosia salad and coffee. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. Got flavored coffee which was great. Had to toss the salad.... Tasted like onions. I happen to very sensitive to onion though so it may just be picking up the flavors from all the salads around it in the cooler. They are all opened bowls, not covered. I went to toss it but no garbage cans outside. Took it in and asked the person at the register if they had a garbage can I could toss it in. She turned around and refunded my money. Told her it wasn't necessary it was only $2 and change but...
