TCH Gear — Local services in Green Lake Township

This is hands down the best spot in, and around Traverse City for your outdoor gear, firearms, ammo, etc,. I can’t recommend this place enough. The staff is extremely knowledgeable, and will be upfront and honest with you. The owners themselves are behind the desk most days, and even with a massive amount of options and gear, it still has that “mom and pop” feel. My most recent experience I got to work with Dave, the archery tech, and with being super green to the world of bow hunting, he explained everything to me, and walked me through all of it. I brought in an old bow that was given to me a couple years ago. Rather than going the salesman route, he inspected it to make sure it was safe, and watched me draw it to know for sure it would work for my size. Once we had that squared away, he got me set up with the new components I needed, and some new arrows. By the end of it, I had a working bow, and he even let me shoot at a target behind the shop and taught me the basics. The kind of customer service this place brings to the table time, and time again is incredible, and something you don’t find everywhere anymore. I live an hour away and had some questions about a backpack so I wanted to get those answered before I drove all the way over to their location.

I made several phone calls and each time the woman who answered the phone acted like I was ruining her day because she had to do something. Exasperated tone and very terse.

When I asked about the size of the pack she just said it “looked big compared to the others” and I had to press her on the question multiple times until she would go check.

She made sure to mention that she “had to go all the way to the back and get a ladder to check in a sarcastic tone”

Very unfriendly and they made me feel like I was inconveniencing them. She had very little knowledge of the products they carry and didn’t seem interested in getting any information for me.

In hindsight I’m glad they didn’t have what I needed because I would rather my business go elsewhere.

I’m giving them 2 stars and not 1 because they do seem to have a decent selection of gear and it wasn’t the absolute worst interaction I’ve had. But definitely...

Gary, the owner, personally took time out of his day to speak with me directly. He was understanding, sincere, and took full ownership of making things right. What impressed me most was what he did after that conversation—he followed through, went above and beyond, and made sure I was fully taken care of. That kind of integrity and customer-first mindset is what truly sets a business apart.

Brad was professional, patient, and incredibly helpful from start to finish. He took the time to understand the situation, coordinated everything behind the scenes, and kept me informed every step of the way.
