To add clarity to Nadia's review about mainland departures: I spoke to the VERY helpful check-in agent at the United counter and she said that the only flight requiring a special departure process is the GUM-HNL flight. This is due to immigration pre-clearance being required after security and prior to entering the sequestered gates for the flight (usually in the gates 7-8 area). It's not immediately clear that the banners for "Economy" and "Premier Access" that you'll see on the second floor are the ones you need to go through to get to Gates 7-8, so here's your warning. I think all the gates from 4-8 are blocked off and you have to go through pre clearance to get to any of them. Note that your mobile pass might get you through security, but it won't get you through immigration pre-clearance. You MUST have a paper boarding pass that will be stamped by the immigrations officers. You will have to go back and queue again to get your paper boarding pass, then again through security, and maybe add to your stress if you did not get to the airport super early (3hrs) as recommended.
You may be lulled into thinking that doing your check-in via mobile, being labeled "Travel Ready," and just dropping your bags at the now-available bag drop aisle will save you time. Being "Travel Ready" with United doesn't help, as you won't have a paper ticket that the immigrations officers will need to stamp. Again, when you check-in your bags, make sure to also get paper tickets for the GUM-HNL flight. However, if your flight is to Osaka or some other city, that bag drop aisle is now available for you to quickly get on your way (you just need your mobile boarding pass and do NOT need to get a paper copy). These differences are NOT at all clear via any documentation from United or the Guam Airport or other reviews I've read regarding this topic.
Keep in mind that the United Club is after security and before pre-clearance, so allow time for that last queue if you are using that lounge.
You do not need to go through pre-clearance if you are going to the mainland via another route (e.g., via Seoul or Osaka), as you probably will be sent to another gate, like 9 and higher, that doesn't have this extra step. You will be cleared once you actually hit HNL or SFO or whatever US airport you land in first.
Apparently Guam has a slightly less strict set of entry requirements for some countries than the US itself does. Therefore, this filter for travelers is necessary here, as Honolulu is the only direct flight to the "mainland" from Guam as of this writing. It also helps you avoid the possible throngs of immigration lines in Honolulu. That said, you still have to pick up any checked baggage in HNL, go through customs, re-check your baggage (see below if checked all the way to your destination), and re-enter through security if you have onward domestic flights. There is no longer an agricultural inspection for transiting passengers from Guam--you only need to give the baggage handlers in Lobby 4 your checked baggage if you're checked all the way through to your destination.
Note that United will also let you check-in your bags and get your boarding passes the night before (7:30-9:30p), but I did not try this--it was offered as an alternative to the morning rush (there are about 6 or so United flights all around 7-9am). But of course you'll need a car or family/friends to get you there and back.
The United boarding procedure is also slightly different from what I witnessed at other domestic United flights: wheelchairs ONLY (wheelchair agents will line them up one by one), with maybe a sole traveler companion folks with disability military, children under 2, 1k Group 1 Group 2 Group 3-6
Other than that, it's a decent and airy airport with helpful United counter agents. Not much is open in the morning, so be warned if you're on one of those early United flights. The wheelchair service at the time was woefully understaffed...but sort of understandable given that it was...

we choose local Taxi for the transportation to our first hotel!
many people usually make reservations like sanding services or Korean's Taxi via their SNS!
but, our rule number 1 of abroad trip is using public transportation!!

Read moreActually, it is not too bad. But there is major construction going on to improve the facility. But it still lacks a good selection in the food court and ofcourse the amount of time to clear immigration at some times can be over 2 hours long. The walkalators and escalators always seem to be out and under repair and the TSA can be pretty rude to you if they are in a bad mood. Other than that, Guam is a great place to visit so don't let the airport change your mind about visiting the island. It's one of the few relaxing places left on this planet. The previous remarks were written pre-covid. Post-Covid, the food court has not changed, TSA has updated their xray system but although much more thorough it seems to take just as long as before. Immigration lines are fast when there are alot of officers on duty just try to avoid flights arriving from Korea in the afternoon as the Immigration Hall can get overwhelming. Walkalators, still out. Escalators, operating most of the time. Guam is still a paradise! Don't come during the rainy season! The ceiling in the airport still has places that leak. Infact, during the most recent typhoon, the roof drains could not handle the volume of rain water, causing overflow and flooding. There were even live video of waterfalls coming down...
