When I moved to the Lehigh Valley from Philadelphia, I was looking for a great haunt. When I discovered the Hotel of Horror, I was honestly shocked by how good it was. It surpassed every haunt that I had been to in a generation. Now granted, this all depends on what you're looking for, but it gave me everything I wanted and then some.
Growing up in Philly, I came to appreciate haunts that were strong in atmosphere, theatricality and unsettling (usually politically incorrect) thematic material. The Byberry Haunted Mansion, Pennhurst and Wildwood's infamously gothic Castle Dracula come to mind. Sadly, as the 80's changed into the 90's haunts became more corporate and family-friendly and haunts in general lost their edge. That is until I stumbled upon this gem.
Upon arriving at the Hotel of Horror (after a creepy ride through the mountains) I was struck by the building itself. It really is a decaying hotel building that is several hundred years old. It is naturally frightening and has a forbidding atmosphere that can't be bought at some Halloween store or Haunt warehouse. This place is GENUINE! After some chainsaw guys chased us in the parking lot we bought our tickets and waited in line, and let me tell you... I've never been in a queue line this detailed or frightening before. It was like something out of Disneyworld, that is, if Disneyworld had a grisly and mature haunted house. The lighting, the sounds, that musky smell, those gory horror movies playing on the tv screens! It all adds to the anticipation and fear. Also, you can hear the people screaming in the haunt as your waiting in line and a myriad of chains, chainsaws and thumps. Characters will interact with you in line. You're seeing and experiencing all this and inevitably you think to yourself "If this is what they're doing to us in the waiting area, then what the heck is going to happen when we actually enter the attraction?!?!" You will not be disappointed.
There are 2 attractions ,"The Hotel of Horror" and "Altered Nightmares" and they both rock! The actors are great and have crafted fully fledged disturbing characters. The atmosphere is detailed and unnerving. The building itself will terrify you as you wander through it. NO SPOILERS, but this place isn't afraid to be political incorrect or in-your-face. They will touch themes and ideas that most other haunts won't go near. The authenticity of this place combined with its commitment to the disturbed make it a champion of haunted houses.
I was so grateful for coming here, because I re-discovered that magic from those intense haunted houses of my youth from the 80's. I thought those politically incorrect and gothic haunted houses were long gone. Well, they're not. They are alive and well at the "HOTEL OF HORROR" in...
Read moreHere's my experience... This was my first time going here and the drive to this place from NYC by itself is a pleasant one that passes through smaller towns and that sets the mood. The parking was straightforward and staff was helpful. The only minor complaint I have is the place is cash only, sure there's an atm but even venmo isn't acceptable. The line to wait also had 3-4 actors entertaining us, so it didn't feel like a long wait.
Now as for the walkthrough itself, it's definitely one of the better experiences I've had at halloween attractions. You're in a haunted hotel, and as you navigate the rooms and stairs that are linear, you can almost imagine a story behind each area. I believe the total time was about 25-30 minutes for both walkthroughs (as soon as the first ends, the second one starts immediately in the next room so it felt like one big walkthrough essentially)
The lightning, fog, strobe effects, music, performance of actors, and general care to the atmosphere was well above expectations. They waited a solid minute to let groups go and when we went, there was one moment where the group behind us catched up but the actors made sure to space out even during the walkthrough, so for 95% of it you're on your own undisturbed.
As for the actual actors/walkthrough experience, these weren't rooms that you just walk through and have them jumpscare you and then they leave. Each actor had an interaction, dialogue, a story, and/or performance to act out. There was one sequence in a church with strobe lights, which I can't spoil but it's one of the best I've had at any halloween event, it was genuinely scary and had a build up to it.
We waited 30-45 min or so in line on opening night so wasn't too bad. I would highly recommend this place, even if it's far, because it's a haunted hotel and there's no other place that executes this idea as...

I recently visited the Hotel of Horrors in Saylorsburg, and let me tell you, this place absolutely exceeded my expectations. It’s easily one of the most impressive haunted attractions I’ve been to, and I’ve been to a lot.
First off, the level of detail in the actors’ makeup and costumes was absolutely top-notch. You can tell a ton of effort went into making everything look authentic and immersive. The props, the rooms, the set design—everything had this incredible high-quality vibe that really drew me in.
What stood out to me the most was that they didn’t rely on the cheap scare tactic of just screaming in your face, which I absolutely loved. I was literally telling my friends how refreshing it was that the scares were more about the atmosphere and the creepiness instead of just someone yelling at you. I usually go through haunted houses with my ears plugged just to avoid that, because it’s more annoying than scary. So I was super happy with how they did it here.
Now, the only reason I’m giving it 4.5 stars instead of 5 is that at the very last room, one actress did get in our faces and started screaming at us to get out, which was kind of a bummer after how impressed I was that they hadn’t done that the whole time. It was just a little disappointing because everything else was so perfect.
But honestly, I would go back in a heartbeat. The overall experience was fantastic, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good, high-quality haunted attraction. Also, while you’re waiting in line, definitely look up the history of the place—it’s got a really cool backstory that adds to...
