Nice length (mile and a half?) hike is a good workout. Trail is steep in some places but footing is consistently good. Saw Piliated Woodpeckers on the way up and a vulture on top. Last section is a series of switchbacks until the final 0.2 mile section to the overlook. Interesting geology is evident on the way, finally becoming stratified slate near the top. Very nice little side hike is available going the other way along the stream heading toward the viaduct. Level with some nice overlooks of a very pretty mountain Brook.

Love this hike! It's a little over a mile for the total hike but the view at the top is AMAZING! Just know you shoot straight up the hill and then walk it back down to the bottom for the hike. There aren't many parking spaces but everyone always parks in the grass off the shoulder too if you need a spot.

A really beautiful vista of the Potomac river if you go up the trail. From the park and ride walk toward Weverton Rd. The trail uphill starts on the other side of Weverton Rd and goes up the stone stairs. When you get to the top of the hill, follow the blue blazes to the Vista.

I haven't hiked on this section of the Appalachian Trail for a few years so I was pleasantly surprised to see the changes over the years to this parking area. It is a nice paved parking lot that is very well lit. I felt very comfortable leaving my vehicle parked here for a couple of days while I section hiked the AT in Maryland. I know these kind of arrangement is always at your own risk, but in the realm of AT parking areas near trail crossings this is the nicest one I have encountered so far. It would also serve as a good spot to meet up with a hiker or...

A few dozen parking spaces. No problem finding parking early but cars were parked along the road when we returned around noon on the weekend. Ascent to Weverton Cliffs starts as soon as you get on the trail NOBO. Ed Garvey Shelter is about an hour hike North. Gathland is 6 miles and about 2 1/2 hours. Harpers Ferry is a few miles South where you walk along...
