I haven't hiked on this section of the Appalachian Trail for a few years so I was pleasantly surprised to see the changes over the years to this parking area. It is a nice paved parking lot that is very well lit. I felt very comfortable leaving my vehicle parked here for a couple of days while I section hiked the AT in Maryland. I know these kind of arrangement is always at your own risk, but in the realm of AT parking areas near trail crossings this is the nicest one I have encountered so far. Read moreNice length (mile and a half?) hike is a good workout. Trail is steep in some places but footing is consistently good. Saw Piliated Woodpeckers on the way up and a vulture on top. Last section is a series of switchbacks until the final 0.2 mile section to the overlook.
Interesting geology is evident on the way, finally becoming stratified slate near the top.
