I was always wondering why Hansen's ground beef had a funny taste when cooked until I was told by an employee who grinds it that they take old brown meat and grind it with fresher meat. Well, when I bought a pack of ground chuck, I could see brown spots all through the pack and it had a funny smell. That's the last time I shopped there. I drive to Walmart in Ludington or Whitehall.
Since Gales closed up, the owner of Hansen's has an attitude and the prices went up as them being the only grocery store in the immediate area. I guess he smiles all the way to the bank since covid happened.... I've seen employees with no masks and them letting customers shop without masks too. We need to eat but come on......remember who's giving you their hard earned money and not much of it especially if you've lost your job because of covid. Rich people are a whole nother breed...they are looking out for...

But as of today I went in to grab something quick from the deli and I counted at least 4 employees behind the deli counter not wearing masks. That’s not even including those who wore it under their noses. The employee directly in charge of dishing out food wasn’t even wearing her mask. Being a small town, I am familiar with the owner and I am very disappointed to say that I saw him wearing his mask below his chin while having a conversation with some employees. Additionally I would say about half of the customers were allowed in without masks or wearing them improperly. If next time I come in I see a change, I would be glad to update this. Very disappointing to see as I know a high majority of their customers are those at most risk,...
Read moreFor a smaller store, Hansen's punches way above it's weight. In the summer the sell local produce. All year long they have an amazing selection of homemade brats, smoked fishes, a grab and go section and everything you need to make spring rolls or egg rolls. They even have gochuchang and all kinds of other Asian goodness.
Their butchers will cut your meat to your liking. The bake their own breads, have an amazing cheese section - everything a cook really needs. I adore this store and it really is a culinary grocery store. They have a large selection of wine and spirits. Everyone is super friendly. They will order things if they don't have what you're looking for. A store of my dreams - just the right size with everything you need. Go there and check it out if you are in Silver Lake. You owe it to yourself! As there motto states "life is too short to eat...
