Akaka Falls, located on the Big Island of Hawaii, is a breathtaking natural wonder that captivates visitors with its majestic beauty and the surrounding tropical paradise.
The journey begins at Akaka Falls State Park, where visitors are welcomed by lush greenery and towering trees draped in exotic vines, forming a vibrant canopy overhead. The air is filled with the sounds of nature, from the chorus of birdsong to the gentle rustling of leaves and the soothing murmur of flowing water.
A well-maintained, paved loop trail leads visitors through the enchanting rainforest, providing a captivating experience along the way. The trail meanders past a diverse array of plant life, including delicate orchids and towering bamboo groves, while quaint bridges cross gurgling streams, offering glimpses of smaller cascades that hint at the grandeur to come. The entire loop covers approximately 0.5 miles and includes several stairs and inclines. While the hike is not strenuous, comfortable footwear is recommended, as the humid conditions and occasional rain can make the path slightly slippery.
As visitors progress along the trail, the sound of rushing water grows louder, building anticipation for the grand spectacle ahead. Finally, Akaka Falls comes into view, plunging an impressive 442 feet into a lush, green gorge.
The sheer scale and power of the waterfall create a mesmerizing display, with mist rising from the plunge pool below, often forming delicate rainbows that dance in the sunlight. The viewing deck provides an excellent vantage point to admire the falls, though dense vegetation occasionally obscures parts of the view.
The experience is not just visual but immersive, engaging all the senses. The thunderous roar of the cascading water, the cool mist against the skin, and the earthy scent of the rainforest contribute to an unforgettable encounter with nature’s grandeur. Many visitors describe the walk through the dense, jungle-like foliage as just as enjoyable as the waterfall itself.
Practical considerations for visiting Akaka Falls include parking, fees, and timing. The on-site parking lot is small and requires a fee of $10 per vehicle, while entrance to the park costs $5 per person.

Read moreBeautiful looped trail to see both the 422 ft world famous Akaka Falls & the smaller 300 ft Kahūnā Falls. You only pay for parking $25/vehicle. Saw amazing rain forest vegetation & trees, just beautiful and lush. As this is 11 miles from Hilo and part of the beginning of the rain forest it rains constantly and the day we went it was no less wet so bring your rain jackets/ponchos or umbrellas. But umbrellas are a hindrance as the trail is 2-way and narrow with many people utilizing it so you have to move your umbrella everytime you pass someone on the trail.
On the drive into (or out of) the falls parking area there is a young man and his friendly dog who sets up a pineapple and coconut stand $10/bag of cut pineapples or 1 whole coconut. He'll machete the top of the coconut off so you can drink the juice then he'll hack the coconut into pieces so you can eat the meat inside. Our coconut was more on the maturing side but if you get the young coconuts the meat is like jelly, really good. Advising to tip the young man as well since he harvests the...

Go to this place.
Ignore the foolish reviews that say this location isn’t special if you have already seen Niagara Falls. Like people, waterfalls are all unique and special. Akaka Falls is HIGHER than Niagara Falls. And it is just a totally different experience. Skipping THIS waterfall simply because you have already seen another is like saying “I don’t need to go to a Killers concert because I’ve already seen U2 and they’re a bigger band.”
Similarly, ignore the complaints that it is partially closed. You can still experience all that you need to see.
I WILL +1 the suggestion to stop at the farm stand on your way out for fresh pineapple, coconut, and sugarcane. I’ll review that location separately, but it definitely contributes to the Akaka Falls experience.
Seriously, don’t miss this if you are visiting Hilo. It is one of the best experiences the area...
