Very cool. Walking on the mouth of a volcano. The switch back trail to the volcano floor/center was a medium hike. The sight is spectacular and pictures do not do it justice. Adjacent to this site is the Thurston Lava tube so I'd recommend this being a place you should visit. Know that it will cost $30 per car to enter the volcano park. Go early bring food and water. The weather changes from hot to rain or in between at a blink of an eye so be prepared. There are many more things to see. Plan on spending an entire day here. There are so many things to experience, see and do on the Hawaiian islands you really have to pick and choose. Unless you are going to stay for several months, you cannot do or see everything. It would be best to have someone familiar with each island work out an itinerary for you or do a lot of research and make an itinerary out...
Read moreBest trail you can hike while in the national park! Gorgeous hike that descends from the rainforest at the rim into the dry, desert-like crater, and back up into rainforest. Super cool to see how the plants change during this hike. It is an almost 4-mile trail with a steep ascent and descent, so be prepared for the steps. Definitely wear solid hiking shoes and bring lots of water because it can get hot when you hike down into the crater, because of the sun exposure (also bring sunscreen). If you are able (physically and have the time), don't miss this...
Read moreWhat an awesome place! Feels like you're standing in a whole other world. The hike itself isn't bad... we did it with a 5 year old and a 2 year old with no problems. Was raining pretty hard when we did it, but just added to the experience. The walk down is moderately steep through the rain forest. When you get to the bottom you're immediately into the crater. Steams vents all around. Keep an eye out when you're walking in, as the settled lava lake created some big cracks and crevasses that would be no fun...
