Rum works here.

My husband and I enjoyed the privilege of a unscheduled tour from Teresa, the Distiller, at the distillery. He found the location from the Hawaii tourism site. Since we were planning a trip to Honoka'a, the visit was a logical stop en route.

What we didn't realize was that the distillery, although having plans for a tasting room, isn't yet prepared for formal tours.

Teresa was undeterred (even though we could see she was occupied with the forklift and was keeping a watchful eye on the still). She welcomed us into her work space and gave us a lay person's overview of the distilling process.

Teresa explained that the still, which is used to produce the rum, was made in Portugal and that cognac wood barrels are used to age the rum. We were even treated to a tasting of the rums which are currently being produced.

Our preferred was the local Agricole primarily because it is 100% locally produced from the sugar cane fields north of the distillery. While there is a select audience for its distinct flavour profile, Teresa advised that there are plans for further iterations of the Agricole.

Not being a fan of rum (not so in re hubby), I was surprised by the warming finish of the Agricole. I suspect (and the husband waits impatiently) that future iterations of this rum to be a solid contender for a less esoteric, but actual demographic.

5 Stars for Teresa's knowledge and willingness to share same with two unexpected visitors. 4 stars for the distillery since the tasting room isn't yet functional. Bottom line, we couldn't purchase a bottle of rum (although we were directed to the retail bricks and mortar where the products are available)...

My brother and I appreciate good rum and good craftsmanship. The other day we were searching for a rum store on google and lo and behold we came across Kuleana Rum Works. We had the privilege to meet the owner and see his facility. After talking with the owner we can appreciate the effort, time, attention, care and craftsmanship he takes in his products.

We look forward to trying his rums and will certainly be ordering from him...

I’ve heard this place is right on the money!! I’ve even heard that the owner stands in front of the sugarcane and let’s the sun reflect off of his head giving the crops that little bit of...
