There's a sign at the end that says ROAD CLOSED with very well worn walking paths on either side. The road used to be crater rim road (West) until 3,000 feet of roadway fell 720 feet down into the volcanic crater. What's left, is still there but...

We went when the volcano was really active at about 7pm. Volcano totally went off the next day. Anyway, lot was packed but be patient as spots open frequently. We got right next to the walk way....

Short walk to the viewpoint. Beautiful view of the crater. Quite a few parking spots available. I visited on a Friday at about noon. And there wasn’t much crowd. The crater rim road was closed...

Short walk to the viewpoint. Beautiful view of the crater. Quite a few parking spots available. I visited on a Friday at about noon. And there wasn’t much crowd. The crater rim road was closed after this point.

Big parking lot Everyone was lined up at the previous parking lot while this one had plenty of spots open. It’s a 5 minutes walk to the Kilauea viewpoint so just park here if the other lot is full
