Appointment system was a bit anxiety-provoking, but worked well. I changed my appointment twice online due to schedule conflicts. Due to the pandemic, it was often several weeks or a month ahead. The reminder email generated upon making an appointment, with automated calendar appointment option, worked well.
I arrived 10 minutes before my appointment on a Monday morning. There were a couple people ahead of me, but they were taken care of expeditiously. I was in and out in half an hour and was able to 1) renew my driver's license to a gold star license, plus get a temporary one, and 2) renew my automobile registration, both in less than half an hour.
It helped by making sure I had the correct forms ready and filled out, as well as all the documents needed for proof to get a gold star ID. I also had my old automobile registration and pending safety check paperwork to update / get a copy of my current registration and sticker.
I also had hoped to get a duplicate title, however had neglected to bring the lien release that I should have had. My bad. The staff helpfully informed me what to do most efficiently when I get the lein release from the former lienholder, and come back for a title copy.
The staff were experienced, helpful and friendly. They clearly must do things by the rules, and the paperwork must be just so, however they make helpful suggestions even if you overlook something.
They are in a difficult situation, working with many government forms and regulations, but if you know the rules and are ready ahead of time, they have always been very efficient and kind in my experience.
Easily accessible location, plenty of parking up slope from the building. Look both ways before crossing the street from the parking.
Remember to bring CASH OR A CHECK, no plastic of any kind accepted. I was fortunate to have just enough cash on...
Read moreDMV in Kona requires a reorganization to better service the taxpayer. COVID-19 has definitely put a stronghold on retail businesses, but this is not a retailer. It is an essential part of the county of Hawaii and the US government that requires you to be in compliance else face fines and possibly jail time.
Currently you are required to make an appointment online as there is no walk in service. The county sights COVID-19 as their reasoning to protect the public and their workers. What about those that have no access to an internet service? Well the option is to call. Have you tried calling? It’s a “press 1 for this and press 2 for that .... it’s Alice’s rabbit hole in 2021. Who has time for that? So back to the online appointment option. The available dates are 6-8 weeks out at the DMV in Kona, for a vehicle transfer within the state of Hawaii. But you could get an appointment 4-6 weeks out if you drive to Hilo or Waimea or Puna, And there in is the next dilemma. Driving without a vehicle registration and risk being stopped and cited by the police officer who is just doing his job in keeping the roads safe, another County entity.
You have to wonder if this is the age of technology or are we doomed because the county really has no idea how to better...
Read moreThe complex itself is beautifully designed and complements it’s setting perfectly, amphitheater for public gatherings and a large grassy courtyard are excellent additions to make this feel less like a cold brooding government building and more like a gathering place for the people.
I have read one complaint of the general layout of the complex to be confusing, however from my experience the person at the visitors desk which is near the main entrance driveway/drop off area will gladly direct you to your destination! :)
One star off for the DMV which I can’t dock them for too much since it is too common of an experience no matter what municipality...
