I survived a house fire when I was 15. It was during a Sub-Zero night in February of 1979. I grew to appreciate what firefighters do, especially volunteers after that. I also am a huge fan of Chicago Fire, so yeah, I wanted to see up close the equipment used and how. It's all there in Roscommon! The Memorial and the Festival are just a few miles apart, but both truly memorable. I started at the Memorial. If the site wasn't grand enough by itself, a group of about 50 or so firefighters on motorcycles were posing for a commemorative photo. For a rather solemn location, the laughter and pure joy of them being together went a long way to illuminate an already stellar day weather-wise. Just a few miles away was the Festival, which is held at the actual training grounds where firefighters from all over the country arrive to learn the latest techniques in firefighting and train with the latest equipment. The Big Red Barn was full of activities including raffles, auctions and a full bar! It was really an amazing blend of festivities for all ages! Lots of activities for the kids, and did I mention the firetrucks? I'll definitely be back again next year as it is always celebrated on the third weekend in September. I'll...
Read moreOverall we had a great time but there were no signs anywhere directing us to the grounds once we got to roscommon. After we were done visiting all the exhibits we decided to grab dinner to go and settled on steak sandwiches, the owner to this partitular trailer was so rude. I had a great time before this encounter but that experience and his negative comments on top of the price for sandwiches ( that I would have been happy to pay otherwise) just bothered me when this is supposed to be a beautiful celebration. I hope it was just a bad day for him or someone says something to him I felt bad for his employees they did not have the attitude it takes to deal with the public...
