You simply cannot pass this overlook by on your way to Homer!! (For one, you can't miss it, there's a huge parking lot overlooking some amazing mountains and the sound!😉
I'm a photographer and usually avoid the more taken path with regards to shots, but the morning I was there the light was really hitting the water and there was an illumination of the mist that made me pull over. I really enjoyed the view of the Spit fro up there...it really is worth stopping for.
From the viewpoint, you can see the road you'll take down the spit and the town with it's marinas in the distance. I'm not a fishing show fan, but I was lucky enough to see some of the Greatest Catch boats in harbor while I was there...which was pretty cool! The town was pretty much closed for business as I was there in late October, but it was still fun to drive around and hit the end of the road...it felt like the edge of everywhere...
If you make it down there to the end of Homer, there are some more amazing views of glaciers and mountains. I even saw some sea otters fishing off the beach there. It's just a beautiful spot to reflect in. ...

There is an unmanned visitor information center located on site with plenty of brochures on everything from restaurants, historic buildings, fishing charters and wild life viewing charters.
While there, be sure to peep through the looking glass to get an even better perspective of the Spit and a greater appreciation of just how large it is.

Read moreNot a bad place to stop for some pictures of the bay and the range across the water. Unfortunately there are some trees blocking some of the views but you can see a long ways out and around. Go out to the Homer spit for the best pictures. If you pull over here in the winter or early spring be prepared to stomp through some hefty snow banks. There is a gift shop/tourist box here but it was closed up tight when I visited...
