The ownership of the plaza (same family for the last 40+ years) has not kept up their establishments well, especially the outsides of buildings and the parking lot. This area has deteriorated quite a bit from when I was a child, and the buildings can't seem to keep consistent tenants with quality like it did with the old IGA and famous local bakery. It's a shame that when describing where I live, I purposefully try to avoid describing it as near Cherokee Plaza, when that used to mean something positive years ago. Hopefully as more families move to Independence and demand nicer facilities, the family of this owner will persuade them to add value back into what could be a high traffic area.
