Teen Road to Safety — Local services in Laguna Beach

I just wanted to learn to drive so I could get my girlfriend out, make her proud, feeling like I was moving forward. I work a minimum wage and saved every dollar for months to pay this school. I thought it was worth it, but no.

The teacher was a nightmare. Old, bitter and rude about everything. Called me "pathetic" every time I stopped. All lessons have passed on how "children today are soft" and how "real men do not need directing powers."

The worst part was his attitude towards people outside the car. Every time someone walked near the road, he mocked and said things like: "Pedestrians always think the world stops for them. Ways are for cars." One guy stepped out of the curtain and the teacher murmured, "should wait. People had respect." It felt gross just sitting there.

And then he crossed a line. When a woman passed, he smiled and said, "In my day, girls knew better than being here showing." I'm just freezing, staring forward, wanting the lesson to end. It was gross and made me sick even to be in the car with him.

I left every lesson feeling smaller, broken and hopeless. And the worst part? My girlfriend broke with me. She said I had no faith, no future. This was supposed to be my chance to change that, and instead took everything I had.

Why 2 stars instead of 1? The car. It was actually a nice, newer model smooth riding, good usage. If only the person sitting in the passenger seat would not be the worst part of the...

We needed a driving school with instructors who were capable of working with special needs children - ones who would possess an incredible amount of patience and understanding. A friend referred me to TRTS based on her experience w/her own children.

At the beginning of 2023, I went ahead and purchased the 20 hour package for my son, which gave him a total of (10) 2-hour sessions. He was very grateful for all the coaching sessions with Mike, Mark, Salvadore, and Jordan. Each of them brought forward their own expertise. I’m glad he had a good variety of input and recommendations.

After the course was finished, my husband and I practiced with my son for an additional 8 months. He passed and secured his license in October 2023 on his first try.

We used Teen Road to Safety with our oldest and we’re happy with them, so we decided to use them again for our younger child. We chose Steve as our driving instructor the first time around and we’re happy with him. This time; however, we have had a lot of trouble scheduling…with any instructor. Availability is limited and, it appears there are only two instructors right now. Appointments are booking a month out. This is inconvenient since you can’t take a lesson until you have passed your written test (obviously), but your permit isn’t valid until your behind the wheel instructor signs off on your first lesson. As a result, it pushes out the start date of your 6 month waiting period before you can get your license.
