I had a few visits with Summit Dental and I am deeply troubled at the billing departments lack of adherence to the ADA code of ethics, the Golden Rule of medical billing or any other rules or guidelines I have come across that may pertain to a patient rights to truthful communication and transparency. My daughter and I had one routine cleaning each, both were supposed to be covered at 100%. I went to the appointment fully anticipating 100% coverage, for both of our visits. However, Summit opted to use an Xray with higher frequency limitations but they did not feel they had to inform me of this. I attempted to clarify that I was not asking them to inform me of the frequency limitations in my policy, but the equipment used in Summit Dentals facility. I asked how a patient, without any dental training, would know which Xray Summit requires for the visit. They responded that while they do not expect their patients to know the names of the Xrays, they are “always happy to share that information…if our patients ask”. They would also not clarify, so I can only assume that the same would hold true then for any other dental equipment they might use. A patient’s insurance policy will not inform the patient which equipment is selected for each procedure and Summit Dental will not properly inform or educate the patient, unless the patient asks. They did not take a minute to say something along the lines of “the Xray required for todays visit may have increased frequency limitations. Would you like to review your policy before proceeding?” They don’t even have to offer to check for the patient, just give a friendly FYI, especially if the patient has no reason to suspect there will be any charges for a visit anticipated to be covered at 100%.
The most serious issue, however, is regarding a crown replacement. The claim form submitted by Summit Dental was incomplete, causing it to be rejected by my insurance. Even though Summit Dental is aware that all insurance companies have different requirements and different frequency limitations, they failed to provide complete and accurate information in order for my insurance to calculate coverage based on my individual plan. I was told by Summit that insurance did not ask for the date, Summit did not have the date, so they left it blank. I do not know which claim form they used but the ADA dental claim form states all fields must be completed and the full claim form lists the instructions for this specific date field. I was also told by my insurance that this specific date field is required for a replacement crown. When the claim was partially rejected by my insurance, Summit did not contact me to explain, they just sent me the bill. During Summits attempt at defending their actions after the fact, I was told since they did not have the date they left it blank “due to it being a guess or estimate” and because they want the insurance to make decisions based on “facts not guesses”. Again, as Summit Dental has stressed that all insurances are different, Summit Dental still opted to take a chance at guessing whether or not the date field needed to be completed. There is also a concern that filing an incomplete claim could have caused extreme undue financial hardship as it may have affected my out of pocket expense for the estimate. And a patient receiving a bill 8 months after a procedure, may pay out of pocket an amount that should have been fully covered by insurance, for fear of getting sent to collections.
I feel very strongly that the actions of the Summit Dental billing department are unethical, suspicious and potentially fraudulent. Based on my experience, I do not trust Summit Dental to initiate any communication or have any transparency regarding billing methods that would allow a patient to make an informed decision regarding their health care. As they do not seem to have an obligation to inform or educate their patients, I do not recommend...
Read moreShort story: orthodontist is great, front desk staff are so ridiculously nice and accommodating, all the assistants I had were great (shout out to Ashley especially).
Long story: I had braces over 10 years ago primarily because one of my canines was sky high, so braces for 2 years (with a different equally amazing orthodontist). I had a permanent retainer put on top and bottom from canine to canine and all was said and done, no issues until last year when my top bonded retainer broke and was pushing on my teeth weirdly at the start of the weekend. I got into my dentist to have him fix it as my old orthodontist was booked out a month (even for emergency appointments)! My dentist fixed about a half a week later but my teeth had been pushed around or something by my broken retainer so it didn't take a broke again and this time was hurting my teeth so I called around every orthodontist in my area (Utah county) and basically none could see me or were not open on Fridays so I ended up here at summit: the only orthodontist I could find that was open every Friday (some are open every other). The front staff people I spoke with were great (I want to say Chelsea? helped a ton one time I called) and were able to get me in same day. I had to have my bonded retainer removed and a spring removable retainer put in for a few months to help fix the shift.
When it came to putting my bonded retainer back in, the orthodontist at summit (I forget his name...) put on a bonded retainer covering the first four teeth, not my canines. I was so anxious about this because my canine was the bulk of problems when I had braces and I don't want it to shift. It caused me a lot if anxiety for a while because I have had a consistently hard time wearing my removable retainer comfortablt when I sleep (I think I like suction my mouth weird when I sleep and it makes me wake up with a headache and mouth ache wearing it when I sleep even after the 2+ months I had to wear it wearing it every night for the rest of my life is just not something I would reasonably do. This last week, part of my bonded retainer broke so I had to come in for a fix (again the front office staff were so helpful getting me an appointment as it's hard for me to leave work in the middle of the day so they worked with me to get me in as late in the day as possible) and I told the orthodontist my concerns and told him I really just wanted my retainer put back in like before from my canine to my canine and (I really might sound like a Karen here I know.. I felt bad) I just didn't think I should have to pay for it because if I was ever spoken to beforehand about how he was going to put it in I would have asked for it put in canine to canine, also that's what I had when I came in originally. I didn't know a permanent retainer sometimes only covered 4 teeth, I though canine to canine was just standard otherwise I would have said something. I was so worried I was going to have to put up a fight, but he was happy to fix it for me. Now it's exactly how it was before and I am not stressed all the time about my canine moving. Ashley was my assistant for a few appointments and she was sweet. She explained everything she was doing, which for me a, grown adult who is fine with the dentist was just interesting because I've never really known what all the steps are that they do. For a kid who is scared, it would be so helpful to relax when they are just poking around in your mouth to know what it is they're doing. I wish I had had her as an assistant when I was a kid and was getting braces. I was so shy and scared back then, I just think it would have been very helpful to me.
That's my annoyingly long story. I would recommend them to anyone who lives closer to them than me (an hour drive one...
Read moreI had an old root canal that failed. My tooth became accessed and I was in alot of pain. Dr. Hadley and his assistant Tabby came to my rescue this weekend. I was seen after hours as an emergency and the bad tooth needed to be pulled and I needed a bone graph so that I could get an implant. They gave me antibiotics, hot me out of pain and scheduled surgery for Monday afternoon and did the best job ever working with my inflexible work schedule. Well let me share that I've had one implant and my last surgery was so painful I swore I would never do it again. But here I am recovering. I would like the world to know what an outstanding and amazing job Dr. Holt did on my surgery! Yes, I'm in pain and recovering but the difference between my first surgery and this surgery are not even comparable. Less swelling, less surgery time, less pain, and I did need to be off work for the day after but I should be able to be back to work tomorrow. The last time I had this surgery I was in so much pain for day Any surgery is painful but the difference was so positive that I felt it important to write about it and give some well deserved recognition, which by the way I don't normally take time for. I would recommend Dr. Holt if anyone needs an implant done hands down. As long as he remains at Summit he's going to be my go to for sure. Professions. Friendly, Knowledgeable, and is a very good surgeon. I'm not the easiest person to please. I get alot of anxiety about procedures and I'm a scaredy cat, a bit of a winer I suppose....so for me to write a raving review is a big deal. Thank you Dr. Holt for taking such good care of me. I would highly recommend you all day long. That all being said the office deserves some kudos as well. They had to reach out to me at work and that did not go over well, but as soon as I communicated with their office as to why, they were very understanding and put notes on our family account about the best way to contact us and why. Camille has always been good to us along with all of their office staff. Summit Dental is just like family to us now. Collectively they have a darn good team! Every dentist is good and every office person is smart , professional and nice. I can't say that about any company without a complaint. So, if you are looking for a good family dental office you just found it. Summit has done braces for 3 family members in our household, a bunch of work on my mouth. And even worked on a couple disabled family members that are dental nightmare's..no judgement, professional, and courteous. I am very grateful for their kindness. Thanks for being so awesome to our entire family Summit Dental. We are not going anywhere else that is for sure. We are loyal to you because you've earned it! Have...
