Employees are for the most part great, friendly and likeable and the store is clean. However, Items are all terribly overpriced by 50 to 100% I will only go there for a quick shop but not weekly grocery shop. Example; Bounty paper towels are twice the cost of SR. I can get them delivered by Amazon Prime in one day at less than half this store price. They never have a butcher on duty anymore and unless you want prepackaged meat, poultry and fish (or frozen) this is not a good place . Had to buy frozen Bubba burgers since they had no fresh ground beef. Selection on most items ( if they have it) is generally pretty limited. For example, frozen breakfast...Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches are all on biscuits never anything else like croissants. Frozen pizza mostly just plain. Looked for dishwasher jet dry and they don't carry it or substitutes. Their idea of variety is to have the same product just from different manufacturers instead of alternate product offerings. I don't understand the Spanish theme here in Califon. Not for me I'm not a fan of Goya products or South American/ Mexican products and the town demographics don't warrant it. They offer a limited selection of cakes cookies or pastries and such and all are prepacked or frozen and from manufacturers I never heard of. Tried a couple and ended up giving them to the dogs each time. Cannot find prices on them anyway so I am done with that. They need to at least carry Entenman's. This is NOT a high quality store but they charge high quality prices and the products fail to deliver. Having read the other reviews made me wonder how much some of those people were paid to submit a good review. Hard to believe they were honest. Sorry to not be able to leave a...
Read moreI didn't want to get caught in rush hour traffic Friday evening, so I bypassed 78. Part of my route went through Califon, and a grocery store I thought I should check out caught my eye. After reading good reviews, we went up there today, and I was super-impressed by the freshness & quality of their produce, meats, and fish. They also have a well-curated selection of specialty and ethnic foods, leaning more toward Latino goods, but a healthy representation of other things, as well. Additionally, they have a lot of more local produce and smaller, a good selection of organics, craft food items, a deli, and a Cuban hot food bar.
It was also ridiculously clean and organized. It's also quiet; no loud overhead music to try and think or talk over. There's always so much going on in my head that I need those things in a store. I find stores like Shoprite overwhelming. This is welcoming, with really nice people on staff. Truth be told, I'd move to Califon just to have access to a place like this. The idea of being able to go into a smaller store on my way home and get healthy, well-cared-for ingredients for an impromptu dinner, especially if I could come out of it feeling more peaceful, not less, matters that much to me.
I would not recommend buying milk, paper products or household items there as that's where the big markups are. On the flip side, though, you can get your favorite staples without driving too far when the weather's bad, or when you'd just rather not make a big trip. The majority of other things are competitive, with some being slightly higher. Those prices are entirely fair, though, given the quality and...
Read moreWe (and our friends and neighbors) were looking forward to the opening of the Aqui Market in Califon. And it didn't disappoint in terms of appearance and freshness of its produce .... although initially it lacked an adequate stocking of almost everything. It's since corrected that problem for the most part. However, our friends and neighbors, as well as ourselves, were really put off by the outrageous pricing of most products. The pricing greatly exceeded Shoprite's (Chester and Flanders stores) pricing as well as Whole Foods (Morristown) pricing --- not an easy task. Unless we have a cooking emergency, we won't be going to Aqui very often to restock our pantry .... that is, until their pricing policy is more competitive with Shoprite's. Many people we've spoken to feel the very same way. This would have been a 4-5 star review, but for the fact that the outrageous pricing of their products brings in down to barely a 2. Disappointed .... but hopeful the management sees the light...
