This past weekend, my family and I stayed at the Timberwolf Retreat - a cabin that comfortably sleeps 8. Upon arrival to the cabin, everything appeared to be in order. Ultimately with an 8 month old asleep in the room where my in-laws were staying, they went to bed without turning on the lights. After a nights sleep, they woke up very disturbed as they discovered that their bed sheets had been soiled with unwashed blood (pictures attached) - which they failed to notice the prior day as a result of the sleeping baby and resultant not turning the lights on. Understandably disgusted with her findings, my mother in-law reached out to management.
Due to lack of reception, we struggled to get in contact with the owner at first, resulting in the attached text messages. Despite initial struggle with phone service, further correspondence was made via a phone call. My mother in-law asked for some additional items (new towels, missing dish rags, additional/pillows in better condition), though they were not pertinent to our stay - simply requests as the cleaning coordinator would be coming to the lodge regardless. The owner said that the "cleaning coordinator is going to bring stuff out to you and take care of those beds. It might be a little while, as she needs to get stuff around. She said the beds were changed".
Approximately three hours after initial contact regarding the issue, the cleaning coordinator appeared. Upon arrival, not only was she unapologetic regarding the bloody sheets, but she pranced around as if we were at fault. We found her repeatedly saying that her "best cleaner" had been the one who changed the sheets, that she had "checked in four sets of sheets and checked out four", and that the bloody sheets "would have never made it out of laundry". Ultimately, it reached the point where her blame of us was so evident that I said, "well, we don't have any gaping wounds, so it is certainly not us".
It was not until we mentioned that lights were on upon our arrival the previous day, that the door was not locked and an empty hot tub sanitizer bottle was present, that the cleaning coordinator backed down. She said it was odd that there was not a mattress cover on the bloody bed as well. As we understandably asked for all bed sheets to be changed, the cleaning coordinator also brought us EIGHT clean towels, and took our EIGHT soiled towels. I emphasize this as she had so clearly expressed their cleaning process - a one-for-one check-in / check-out system.
Prepared to leave, the cleaning coordinator FINALLY apologized, though still did not assume any sort of responsibility for the bloody sheets, as if we were the only logical suspects. That was the last contact we had - no apology from the owner Rob.
For the remainder of the weekend, we focused on enjoying our stay and family time together, though we discovered that 3/4 of the beds did not have mattress covers (not problematic for us, though the coordinator had mentioned that they should have them). After my mother in-law reflected upon the weekend with her children/grandchild, frustration over the lack of empathy expressed by the owner of the lodge remained. Ultimately, taking initiative after never hearing from management following the cleaning coordinators departure, she reached out to the owner. Upon discussing the matter with him, he expressed no empathy, provided no apology, and instead said that the entire situation was "funny".
I have NEVER experienced such horrific management - as seen in response to every other poor review left, blame is consistently placed on the customer, rather than assumed by management. Absolutely no empathy is shown, though blatant exaggerations (like mentioning that we were provided with 20 towels) is clearly present.
If considering staying with Serenity Cabins, I strongly urge you to consider other options. Know that if possible, I would award them 0/5 stars and if you face any sort of issue, expect no empathy, no apology, and of course, an inaccurate response to your review of your...
Read moreThis place was beyond what I could have imagined! This was my first trip to Hocking Hills, and I was hoping to get a cabin in the middle of the woods with no sunlight. From the pictures on their website, it gave the appearance that the cabin was in the middle of a field with limited tree cover. We had a large group going with us, so we were limited in the type of cabin that we could get.
As we pulled off the main road and on to the gravel driveway, we drove through a field. "Surely, this is where the cabin will be," I thought. Then we drove up a slight hill. As we crested the hill and started our descent, the cabin came in to view. It was completely shaded and in the middle of the woods. I can't begin to describe how happy I was!
We punched in the door code, which I received a day or two after reserving, and the door opened up immediately. Off to a good start!
Inside the cabin, the pictures again did not do it justice for how big it was! The furniture was all in great condition (there was one couch in the basement that started to have its pleather flake off). Every bed was super comfortable, and there were a ton of towels. As an aside, I'd recommend bringing your own pillow if you're a "pillow snob" like me and need a day or two to adjust to a different pillow. You'll definitely want a beach towel for the two hot tubs, but there were plenty of towels for showers for the 12 people who stayed in the cabin.
The two hot tubs were plenty hot, and the instructions for how to use them were clear. The pool table was in great shape, and none of the rails were dead. My dad used to teach pocket billiards in college and brought his cue tip repair kit "Just in case." One of the pool cues had its tip missing, so my dad glued a new one on.
The internet was strong throughout the cabin and had a 15Mb down/1.5Mb up speed. It was fast enough to run a Roku that we had brought while my nephew played his xBox in the basement that he also brought.
We experienced two issues while we were there. The first, our TV on the main level would not turn on. We discovered it late in the day our first day, so I texted the maintenance number. They texted me first thing the next morning and came out and fixed the remote for us. Both guys were friendly and were fun to talk to, and they made us feel like we were their most important task for the day.
The second issue was our fault. In our haste to get out the door on the Friday morning, my mother-in-law left a pair of earrings that had sentimental value to her on a dresser in one of the bedrooms. She called down there and found out that the office was closed for the weekend. On the Monday, they called and said that they looked for them but did not see them. We assumed that the next guest may have found them, or they fell behind the dresser. The people in the office said they'd look.
Today, they called my mother-in-law and said they found them. This was two full weeks after we left! She was so excited that they made every effort to find them and remembered her. The fact that they took time to really look for them, despite the comings and goings of different guests since then, tells me that they truly care about their guests and want to make sure they have a positive memorable experience.
I will never forget this trip, and I can't wait to go back to Hocking Hills! I'll definitely stay with Hocking Hills Serenity Cabins again and am already thinking of excuses to bring a whole bunch of my extended family...
Read moreYOU'D BE BETTER OFF CAMPING!--My family and I recently spent our Thanksgiving holiday at Maple Ridge Lodge, expecting a serene and comfortable getaway. Regrettably, our experience was far from what we anticipated, especially considering the hefty price tag of nearly $3000 for a three-night stay. Here's a breakdown of our disappointing experience:
Basement Area: Misleading and Uncomfortable The basement was a significant letdown, bearing minimal resemblance to the advertised pictures. The couches were not only dirty and worn out but also uncomfortably sinking. Contrary to the images shown, there was no nice center table; instead, we found cheap folding tables and chairs haphazardly placed in a corner, requiring self-setup. (see photos)
Entertainment and Connectivity Issues Both TVs in the cabin were smart TVs, but lacked cable or antenna connection. The remotes were practically useless, only capable of turning the TVs on and off. We had to resort to connecting a laptop via HDMI (see photo), but even this was marred by the cabin's extremely slow internet, disrupting our movie nights and causing the kids to miss the Macy's Parade, much to their disappointment.
Plumbing Nightmares The toilets frequently clogged, and the showers failed to drain properly, adding to our discomfort and inconvenience.
Uncomfortable Sleeping Arrangements The beds were far from comfortable, featuring cheap, sinking mattresses that disrupted everyone's sleep, particularly distressing for my elderly parents. The provided bed linen, consisting of only thin sheets and comforters, was inadequate for the winter season, leaving us cold at night.
Excessive Checkout Responsibilities The checkout list was absurdly demanding, requiring us to undertake most of the cleaning and preparation for subsequent guests (see pic of full list). Tasks included a strenuous walk (in the cold!) to a distant dumpster for all trash disposal. Additionally, the lodge's policy on forgotten items seemed unreasonably punitive, with a fee for returns and no assurance of being informed about left-behind belongings. The superfluous nature of the list was topped when told to reset the thermostat temperature back to 70 deg. The presence of a tip envelope for housekeeping felt like a slap in the face, given the amount of clean-up we were expected to do.
Lack of Basic Amenities The lodge failed to provide essential cleaning supplies, making it challenging to comply with their checkout list. We were fortunate to have brought our own Clorox wipes. The absence of dish sponges was another inconvenience that shouldn't be overlooked in a rental of this price range.
No Laundry Facilities To our dismay, there was no washer or dryer available. This was particularly inconvenient for those wanting to use the jacuzzi, as we had to contend with carrying home wet clothing in cold weather.
In conclusion, Maple Ridge Lodge by Serenity Cabins proved to be a costly disappointment, falling short of basic comforts and amenities. The misleading advertising, lack of entertainment options, excessive checkout duties, and absence of fundamental provisions significantly marred our holiday experience. We advise potential guests to consider these points carefully before booking...
