From the first moment I entered Jay's Brewing Supplies, met its amazing owner Thomas, shopped its ample well-stocked shelves, and explored all its affordably priced high-quality items, I knew I stumbled upon a gem. Jay's is my absolute favorite establishment. Not just for brewing supplies, which they are the best, hands down, but mainly due to the amazing personalized customer service and experience. Thomas and his team really care about each customer and their needs, they go out of their way to ensure you have both the items and knowledge needed to make your project succeed.
That first day I entered Jay's, I had not a clue about brewing. That did not matter to Thomas, he assisted me well after closing time had come and gone. My project was making homemade peach brandy and I had no idea how to get started. With Thomas' guidance and all the supplies I picked up at Jay's, I was able to produce 5 gallons of some great tasting brandy. I was so happy to share some of my final product with Thomas as a thank you for all of his kind knowledgeable encouraging assistance.
So, in closing, if you have not been to Jay's, go, you will be happy and enriched having gone. Please tell Thomas,...
Read moreI'm a new brewer, i first stopped by the shop on a sunday...they were closed, i take blame for that. but my co-brewer and best friend was with...he is allergic to cats, i love them personally but having them around brewing supplies is a little risky. i returned to the shop that next wednesday, i explained what i needed and that i was a new brewer, the people in the store didn't seem to energetic or enthusiastic about talking about brewing, starting, giving hints or tips....i was pretty much told "yep this is what you need, just mix all this together at the same time".....i had to ask what was what....after doing farther research with a much more enthusiastic and welcoming crowd i found out that i needed to take a little more steps than just adding everything in together...if you want fresh options this place has them... but i feel like jay's is much more suited for experienced brewers...if your a beginner like me id advise you to read and do research online and in books... or try other options a little farther away...jay's has an advantage being the only brew shop in the Manassas area.. but not the only option in...
Read moreI have been brewing for just about 1.5 years now, but watching for many. While I know a good amount, it's not enough when it comes to this hobby! Derek's (owner) knowledge of the ingredients, techniques, and over all personability are fantastic and highly valuable.
While the shop is small, don't judge a book by it's cover! I have yet to request an item that he doesn't have or doesnt have something that will work for my need. In one instance I was looking for Warrior hops; while he didnt have it, he was knowledgeable to provide a hop with similar characteristics for my recipie. He also verified in one of his books and was spot on!
In addition, instead of buying ingredients online, just print out the recipie from a website...he can get the grainbill together for you on the spot, for a fraction of the cost with no shipping. Another good thing to note is that he vaccum packs your ingredients. So if you can't get to the brew for a couple of weeks, you'll be in much better shape, especially if you have a grain storage bin!
All in all...this is the place to go for your beer, wine, and cheese...
