Some of the cookies at grocery stores are okay. Those I've had at other specialty bakeries in Memphis have been pretty good, but nothing spectacular. None worth writing a Google review over.
One thing I found lacking was they're too sweet. The flavors overly bold. Grocery stores and many bakeries overload the toppings to where there's not much cookie in the cookie. And always missing was that homemade taste.
At Makedas they have that homemade taste, and let the cookie dough shine with the mixins not being too much or too little, and the sweetness is just right.
Earlier this month I tried cookies from Walmart, Kroger, and Whole Foods which while good, had serious shortcomings. Quite often, the sweetness is overwhelming and distracts from actually enjoying the food; it's a rude and crude flavor profile. I got a chocolate chip cookie from Kroger and one from Whole Food and they both had so much chocolate it was like eating a chocolate bar. If I wanted a chocolate bar, I'd buy one. I had almost given up on finding a good chocolate chip cookie thinking I'd just have to make the myself.
At Makedas I got a chocolate chip Cookie. And boy is their cookie part tasty and the chocolate chips are the right amount; mostly cookie with chocolate chips there to keep the chocolate flavor in your mouth without it overwhelming; that way the cookie part is still super tasty and enjoyable - enjoy the cookie dough, then the chocolate, then the cookie dough.. It also had that homemade taste that you know comes with making the cookies with care and experience.
I tried Makedas butter cookie, oatmeal, oatmeal raisin, chocolate chip, sugar cookie, tea cake, white chocolate macadamia. Best cookies I've had in Memphis so far. I wish they had a snickerdoodle.
I really appreciate that they use butter for their cookies. So many bakeries use vegetable seed oils because it's cheaper. And there's so many reasons to avoid seed oils that I can no longer consider them fit for human consumption.
I am glad I came to Makedas and tried...
Read moreMy gang wanted something sweet but not necessarily some cake so we decided to make a stop here. I have to say I was a little skeptical because of the tragedy that happened here however the customer service of this black owned business totally made up for that.
As soon as you stop into this business, it's almost as if you have stepped back into time. What I mean by that is the smell of baking butter hits you like a truck. That smell takes you back in time so when you were a kid and your mom was making a cake or something. That smell just brought back beautiful memories.
The lady at the counter is one of the owners I think it's a mom and pop establishment. She was so welcoming to us when we entered the store. She greeted us with love. This is rare! She genuinely seemed happy to see us as if she knew us. We automatically started ordering cookies, and more cookies, and more cookies. Not only did we order cookies we also ordered sweet potato pie. I am so upset with myself that I did not get more than one slice.
We wanted some peanut butter cookies as well but they didn't have any out in the display. Her husband was filling the display and we asked him did he have any in the back. He said yes I do. Eventually she asked us where we were from because she could tell we were not from Memphis. We told her we were from Atlanta. She advised that they were thinking about opening up a store here in Atlanta but in due time. We will definitely visit again if ever in Memphis.
They also sell the cookies online.
On the left hand side of the store there's a memorial for rapper Young Dolph who was tragically killed here at this location. I felt a wave of sadness as I view the pictures, the handwritten notes, and the flowers. God...
