TLDR this place is not worth the money no matter how cheap it is. Hidden fees and prolonged stay before you even get a degree.
The only reason anyone should ever be here is if you're getting a full ride. If you voluntarily decide to attend BCC you are basically saying you want no social life, clinical depression that will take years to recover from, and subpar education. Students are not friendly, and will only talk to you if you went to HS together. Professors are apathetic and impossible to reach, advisors are useless and conniving, and water is wet. You will end up wasting more money on extra semesters bc of their stupidity. There are clubs, but they don't have a presence here nor do they do anything to make the school more lively. Security is apathetic, and personally I refuse to believe they are actual hired security and not just random cops that hide around campus to avoid working. All they do is drive 5 mph around the perimeter of campus, so that not only are they unreachable to studentson campus, but make it very easy for someone to bring a gun in and shoot the place. anyone saying BCC is a good school is either lying or being forced to say it at gunpoint. Take note that this is not just my opinion, but general information I have gathered and observed from other students.
In MY experience, as a transgender gay man I felt no lgbt presence, and I've had a professor continually discriminate against me, despite telling her I was trans. As a sufferer of multiple mental illnesses, this school has worsened my mental state. This has been the loneliest 2 years of my life, and I can't wait to get out of this dive. This school is regarded as more difficult than regular 4 years, but I have yet to be met with any challenge. This is my final semester as a stars student and pell grant recipient from a poor single parent family that struggles to make ends meet, and they took my financial aid away because "you've been here too long". Maybe I wouldn't have stayed longer if none of the advisors kept screwing up my classes for the past 2 years!
I dread coming here, between unchallenging classes, having no friends to look forward to seeing in and after classes, and the possibility of being harmed due to security's nonpresence. If you are graduating from high school and are considering this school, I am begging you to save your money. Whether you're rich or broke, don't give these people anything to live on. Be smart and take out enormous loans for a real college experience. It's like buying headphones from a dollar store compared to buying a pair from a reliable brand for 10$. You get what you paid for.
I’m so thankful I’m away at a proper college, brookdale screwed up my ability to receive stars 2 benefits unfortunately but at least my school understands my degree specifications.
EDIT: i would like to add that the professor that discriminated against me was professor Olaoye. There was another student in my class who was also a transgender man that she was misgendering and calling him by the incorrect name. This was around 2016/17. I dont advise anyone taking her class anyway, she has the worst rating on ratemyprofessor with a...
Read moreI enjoyed my time at Brookdale and the majority of professors were great. I graduated back in May 2013 with my Associates Degree and I'm now enrolled in my last year at The College of New Jersey.
Before applying to Brookdale, there are a couple of things that I think people should be aware of:
Brookdale's advisors are supposed to set you on track to graduation as well as providing you advise on which classes to select for your degree. I personally never had any issues with them, but I've heard of plenty of stories from people who got screwed over big time because of their incompetency. If you are looking to transfer over to a 4-year institution after earning your Associates Degree, make sure your credits transfer over.
Brookdale is a college, though I strongly believe that their grading standards are lower than most 4-year institutions. For instance, if you get a 77 or 78, Brookdale would grade that as a B- while other schools would grade it as a C+. Based on my experience, I noticed that most of the professors don't emphasize the percentage of exams in classes. A couple of low exam grades could still allow you to pass a class with a B average with homework, attendance/participation, projects, papers and possible extra credit factored into it. I had some professors give out extra credit like free candy that boosted my grade up at least 5 points. I remember back in 2011 during my student orientation the Dean of students said something like "This isn't an easy school. Most people say that this is like 13th or 14th grade, but this is real college work and you have to work extra hard to succeed...." Somewhat BS in my opinion since the current college I'm in doesn't have the low grading standards Brookdale offers.
Other than those two things I mentioned, if you are looking to save money, or you f*ed up in High School and couldn't get into a good 4-year school, then I recommend applying to Brookdale. But keep in mind, transferring from community college to any 4-year college CAN be a rough...
Read moreTeachers aren’t the greatest I’ve only liked 4 teachers out of almost 2 years of being here. I am on my own teaching myself calculus one of the harder maths and it’s not good. Students in the class are correcting her on many things since they had previously taken calc in highschool. When I had my philosophy class, I had a question during break to ask my professor and her answer was to me “ I have to go eat my M&Ms so you can email me” unprofessional and I had to go to the writing and reading center to help me and they couldn’t understand the material since it was so hard and I couldn’t ask my teacher. Also, one out of my 2 advisors has recommended me wrong class to take and took bio for no reason wasting my time, money, and effort that needed to be put elsewhere into a class I didn’t need. Barely made solid friends and had an experience where I was followed and filed a report.
The amenities such as math lab are great and I’ve had one amazing education professor Christy DeVito I recommend her class to everyone majoring in education! I am going for secondary math education she was the best teacher for her class that covered a lot of material that was important for future to know.
Please take Michael Nolan and Daniel Lopez for math they are awesome for the higher maths! I enjoyed their class. Also Professor Johnathan Moschberger is amazing he is also a reason why I take big pride in my honors program and currently in his class he loves to hear your voice and lets us get out in the real world and find out for ourselves which I loved!
Leaving in spring since the results weren’t...
