I've been waiting to write a post until beth left. She said if i spoke out about how i was treated she would do wellness checks on my dog and possibly take him away .All because I owner surrendered a dog that we adopted in 2018 two days after we got her. We had two elderly dogs that passed and worked with this shelter for three years before we adopted the dog that we returned. So choosing to adopt this dog the decision was not taken lightly. The dog that we took back we did a meet and greet with our kids and our dog . It went pretty well just the dog we we're getting was just a tad shy because she hadn't been around dogs before. The staff said because it was close to closing time and we didn't get much time with her .We could take her for the weekend and if it didn't work out we could bring her back . They said she was good around kids and was good with cats. She was trained and could go off the leash they said. They said our $150 we bought her for would either be returned or could be applied to another dog if we brought her back. When we got her home she was not good off leash and didnt seem to know any commands. The second day she had my cat in her mouth. Growled at my daughter well i tried to breastfeed her. She bit my son in the face. It was a nightmare and all the things she said she was good with was not true. I called on Monday and told them what had happened. They said i could take her back. I talked to one of the staff that had helped us try to find a dog before we got her. She was shocked i had adopted this dog. She said the dog was a owner surrender and needed alot of work . It had never been around young kids, dogs,or cats. She said i know you've been looking for a dog for three years but the staff shouldn't have let you adopt her. She said the dog had been returned once prior because they couldn't handle her. She asked if i had been informed about any of this information and I said no.When i got to the shelter i dealt with beth and she denied me my money back. She said that it was my fault because I should have crated the dog for two weeks and only let it out to go to the bathroom. She said if it bit my dog she would have given me my money back. It bit a child that should be more important than a dog. She said i was not allowed to adopt another animal from them again but my husband could because he wasn't on the do not adopt list! She said she would put the dog in quarantine for biting for two weeks. I caught her putting the dog back up for adoption only ten days into the quarantine. Which i called her and made sure she knew i knew she tried to adopt it out early. The dog was also returned and adopted back out after i took her back. This dog had no health ailments, had it shots and was spayed prior to the owner surrender. The shelter made out well with this dog between owner surrender, returns and adoption they took in $750. I just cant believe they didn't return my money after it bit my child . I have given four animals a good home from here. I no longer have any of them as they've crossed the rainbow bridge. People like her is why people shop and don't adopt! I have told many people about this experience and they were shocked. I have sent family and friends to other shelters for adoption of there new furry family members. As i feel this shelter does not deserve the business! I feel bad for the animals though and hope that with beth gone this place shapes up. I will still continue to not support this place as I feel they...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIām sure most of the people there have good intentions, but with that being said, there should be more employees there that have a bit more background training than the employees that I have dealt with there. A lot of the employees are naĆve and know in general what theyāre talking about but canāt explain to the fullest extent. I have worked in the animal industry for 5 years, I have been employed at 2 veterinary clinics, my mother was an employee at 2 veterinary clinics, we are both very close to a well known vet in Midland. We know what we are talking about when it comes to dogs and cats and we are talked down to by the employees at the humane society, itās insulting. On another note, May 5th, 2018 was the Bissel no fee adoption event that midlandās humane society took part in. When my mother and I arrived, we were talked at by an older woman who was very rude. Stated that if we have cats we should leave because the dogs left kill cats. She was not in any way shape or form trying to be kind nor acting as if she was at work. We were looking for our grandfather and I didnāt take lightly to this woman being rude to my mother so I said we should be let in anyway because whatās the point of an event if we canāt go and look and tell people we know about the dogs we were going to see. She ācheckedā with the people inside, came back out and was annoyed at letting us in the door. When we walked through, about half of the kennels were dirty and Iām hoping that the kennels housed dogs that were just hyper and overactive. My friend adopted a dog from here and the dog had kennel cough going home. They gave her pills and sent them home. They neglected to tell her that the other dog they have at home who has not had the bordetella vaccine, could contract the kennel cough. When I explained this to her, she proceeded to tell me that the humane society gave the dog the vaccine upon arrival to the kennel. This was astounding to me. When given the vaccine, it takes about 7-10 days for it to have an affect. If the dog is in a stressful situation or has bad anxiety, say, like being put in a kennel, they could contract the bordetella from the vaccine! Itās a no wonder the dog contracted it and is now at home with another dog that could cost my friend more money if the other dog contracts it. The humane society was better off leaving the dog as is and she probably wouldnāt have gotten it. Like I said, they might have good intentions but are very naĆve and rude to humans at least, I hope they arenāt like that to...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI appreciate how clean the cages are. It never ever smells like animals at this location. The litter boxes are ALWAYS clean and tidy.
The following review is just to give you some advice not trying to belittle or make Anyone feel bad .. It's just advice to improve.
I do wish you would pay extra attention to all the cats ears.
Give them a wipe down when they arrive. You've given me two great cats. One lived 1.5 years due to feline leukemia that I was unaware of. That really hurt my family. I mean it devastated us to the core.
And now I'm on my second. He does seem to be healthy other than I had to take care of ear mite problems. He is a beautiful Bombay... šāā¬
The staff is nice but when it comes to New staff they are clueless about things ( teach them the basics) immediately Because it may cost you an adoption. I know because I walked out a time or two because my questions weren't answered.
And keep people out of the sick room! I can't tell you how many potential fur parents I saw walk in there and then go right over to the healthy cats.
I also don't think it needs to be forced when it comes to your clear out the cages adoption week regarding the picture taking with the animal to get the discount... We deserve privacy. Please change that policy. I was forced to take a picture from someone's private phone. Yes, FORCED or I wouldn't have gotten the discount
A fund raiser should be had to get your establishment money to make some extensions on the building when it comes to isolating the sick kitties. You deserve that, just so you know!
Hand have sanitizing should be a REQUIREMENT.... People should be REQUIRED the second they enter your facility to hand sanitize. It's spreading due to you visitors handling cats without the proper washing/sanitizing.
When it comes to donating. Have you ever considered having a container outside that has a sealed top that people can make drops in? It'll prevent a traffic jam inside the already small building. And at the end of each day management can go through it. It can be properly cleaned. Never assume that donated stuff is perfectly fine. Could have illness, fleas, ticks you never know.
Consider that fundraiser to build onto this location. It's too small for all the GOOD you do for the community! Lots of property there... Make...
