Review of YMCA Midwest City Summer Camp (Week of June 16th–20th, 2025) My 4-year-old son attended the YMCA Midwest City Summer Camp during the week of June 16th–20th. I want to share both the positives and the concerns we experienced as a family during that time. Positives: The intake and registration process was smooth and efficient. My son reported that he had a good time overall at camp, which I appreciate. Areas of Concern: Supervision and Organization Issues: Missing Personal Items: On the first day, some of the food items I packed for my son were missing from his bag when I picked him up, and no staff member seemed to know what happened to them. His flip-flops (in backpack, for swim time) were taken out of his bag and mixed up with another camper’s belongings. Additionally, I arrived early for pickup and noticed that swim time wasn’t scheduled to happen for another hour, which led me to question how closely the camp was sticking to an active schedule (which we never received). The system for managing campers' personal items involves placing bags and belongings in open baskets on the gym floor, which I feel leaves too much room for mix-ups and lost items. Camper Activities: On more than one occasion during pickup, I noticed my son and other campers sitting on the floor in a dark room watching movies (child watch room). While downtime is understandable, it gave me the impression that activities might not be as varied or structured as expected. Incident Handling: On the day of the field trip, I was approached at pickup by two counselors (a taller white woman and a shorter Black woman) who informed me that my son had been involved in an incident where he was "run over" and fell. However, no official incident report was provided at that time. Later, I requested an incident report and had to wait while staff filled it out on the spot. The male counselor involved relayed additional details, stating that my son fell on concrete. Unfortunately, no time of the incident was recorded, nor did I receive a call about the situation when it happened, which I believe was an oversight given the potential seriousness of a fall. None of the three stories (two ladies, male counselor, incident report) corroborated. That same day, I discovered my son’s firefighter water blaster toy was missing. He confirmed along with a few counselors that it had been placed in his basket after he got back from the field trip. After 15 minutes of staff searching with no results, I asked Selah (a staff member) for a refund for the toy. I was initially told I would need to wait for the executive director to return from Florida, but fortunately, another staff member from the office stepped in and reimbursed me on the spot. Final Thoughts: While my son did enjoy his time at camp, as a parent, I had several concerns about supervision, communication, and organization throughout the week. These areas of concern are our primary reasons for not returning. I believe the camp would greatly benefit from increased oversight of teen counselors, better systems for managing campers' belongings, more structured and varied activities, and a clearer, more proactive incident reporting process. I hope sharing this feedback will help improve the experience for other families...
Read moreMy daughter and I were members for a short period of time. My daughter had done swimming lessons for a season. Since lessons were over and she wasn’t doing what she was suppose to do for chores and homework I dropped her from further lessons. Needless to say my daughter was not happy. We were not using facilities and decided to cancel membership. Here’s timeline of what happened and still no results:
1/5/20- sent email to Melissa Anderson, director of aquatics about canceling membership. No response. Life got busy and then COVID hit.
7/20/20 - Checked my checking account in July and noticed they were still taking out $60 per month. Personally visited YMCA of Midwest City and spoke to Samantha Marez. After explaining situation, she asked me to forward original email to show that I had requested cancellation of membership. I did on 7/20/30 at 5:49 pm.
No response
8/5/20 - account charged again. Sent another email to Samantha at 5:51 pm
No response
8/7/20 - received a mass email advertising specials for membership enrollment. I replied back to Samantha same day at 6:01 pm letting her know I still haven’t received confirmation of cancellation.
8/7/20 9:16 pm - received confirmation account has been cancelled.
8/8/20 - sent follow up email about refund from February to August being original request was submitted January 5, 2020.
No response
9/9/20 - still no response and took another $60 out of my account on 9/2/20
Called office and Samantha supposedly not there, so left a message about being charged again. Wanting call back. Wanting now a refund from January through September of $540.
I will contact legal department and decided to post my experience in case other members or previous members experiencing same thing.
It should not take 9 months and counting to cancel membership.
I am hoping to get resolution and reimbursement back since I have all my documentation on trying to cancel membership. I’m not going to pay for something I am not using. I do not have money to give away since things are tight due to COVID 19.
My opinion, Business is very...
