I really wish I could give this place a no star review, it was that terrible. One thing, if you own a canoe rental place, you should know the river you are sending families down. My husband and I usually go to Ann Arbor. But since it was our two kids and our two nieces first experience we thought we'd try a place closer to home. They guy told my husband that there were many pick up points. So we opted for the second one. BAD DECISION.
First 15 minutes in we were paddling like crazy to steer the canoes through muck and weeds. And it continued the whole TIME. No current. So at the first pick up point we were tempted to get picked up there. I didn't want to inconvience them, so we decided to go ahead as planned. The only place to go was straight and twenty minutes in there was no where to go besides a WATERFALL!!! YES. A WATERFALL!!! (You'd think they should mention that before the costumer decides on the 2nd pick up point) we pulled off and called the company and told them where we were at. They had no clue!!! HOW IN THE...DO YOU NOT KNOW WHERE WE ARE!!! So we worked it out that we would get picked up at the 1st pick up point. We had to back track. When we got loaded in the Van it had no working windows and no A.C.. after being sunbaked all day. We are about to pull out and the driver gets into a 15 minute phone conversation with the men who where at the second pick up point. (He's not driving BTW) so we are baking in this van. When my husband goes to get our deposit back, he tells the lady at the counter about our experience. She tells us we were supposed to get our canoes out of the water and haul them down the steps along side the waterfall and continue on to the second pick up point! Well that would have been helpful if they told us that in the first place. This place is a circus. No one communicates with each other their employees don't know the river. I won't be going back. Next time I'll go to Skips Canoe...
Read moreI called them inquiring about a Groupon. I asked over the phone if the Groupon included the full package and if we needed a reservation. The women on the phone said it included a 4 hour Kayak and included a shuttle pick up. For 27$ that seemed like a great deal so I bought it. Once we arrived I presented the Groupon. They said they would need a 40$ deposit and that the Groupon actually didn't include a 4 hour ride or a shuttle, instead it was a 2 hour trip. She them informed me that if I was late that they would not refund our deposit (which cost more than the Groupon). The kicker is she said the shuttle would not be picking us up because it wasn't included in the Groupon and we would have to return to the site we initially started at. We told the woman at the front desk about the previous phone call and how an employee from there told us what was included in the package, which is why we bought it. She just shrugged her shoulders and turned away from us. The river was beautiful, but it was hard to enjoy because of how rude they were. An apology wasn't even attempted and the attitude was unbelievable. During our trip we saw several of their customers (more that 6) drinking heavily with obvious open bottles. When I asked the staff about it they told me this is common place, which is very illegal. They have signs stating no alcohol, but no attempt to enforce this was made. despite how obvious it was. The DNR needs to look into this business, as the Michigan waterways should be protected. The staffs attitude and actions were despicable. I'll...
Read moreOperation at Island lake park was horrible. We walked up for rent 2 kayaks, didn't see any. Asked about it, guy wouldn't answer any of our questions, just said sign here. WROTE DOWN OUR CC # on a post it, and put it on our contract. (Edit- a week after coming here that same credit card REPORTED FRAUD ACTIVITY IN MICHIGAN. THANKS HEAVENER for NOT taking care of your customers data.) We walked to our car to get our gear, came back to get our paddles, he wouldn't tell us where to go or what to do. Finally we figured it out, just assumed the kayaks there were for us and went about our way.
We had no idea where we were going or where to stop. The river was beautiful. Once we got to river bend, we walked all around the park looking for a sign. Didn't see one, didn't see the van they'd say would pick us up, nothing. Started questioning whether we should keep going down the river, but decided to wait. Asked a family that was there, they said the van seemed to come by about every 30 min. We waited for TWO HOURS to be picked up. (Would have been faster to walk if we had known where we were going) The kids tuning the joint couldn't give us a number to call to get our money back or anything. Absolutely poor run operation.
Do yourself a favor and go buy some tubes at Walmart, and tube the river. Then walk back. You'll...
