I've always thought of corner stores as the spot where kids go and grab their lil snacks before/after they go play. Where you know the owner and they know you and your mama. Where the quality of selection and service positively reflected the community's connection, needs and values. Where the shop owners took pride in their space and had some connection to the community it profits from.
Unfortunately, I cannot say any of these things about this store, which is why over the last decade since I've lived in my in this community, I've patronized that store no more than 5 times. And each time I've regretted my decision.
I often wonder if they would opt to have the same quality set up in more affluent neighborhoods, or if we are subjected to a 2nd class experience because our neighborhood is of mixed income & racially diverse and there are virtually no similar competitors within a 1 mile radius?
Lastly, this place gives me real 1997 Cup Foods vibes. Do with that...
Read moreThe food is past it's expiration date more often than not. The prices are way too high. I have seen the owner shopping in Mike's Discount Food store (thrift store for food items) and then reselling the same items at a higher price. The service is poor and unsavory people typically hang around the store far too often. The exterior of the store is dirty and there is always trash laying about from people that buy things from the store and just toss their wrappers and such on the ground as opposed to the trash cans that are outside the store. The interior of the store is no better. The store is run down on the inside and is dirty and not well kept. If you need to go shopping you're better off going elsewhere than here.
