I don’t like giving bad reviews. So this review comes with a lot of respect for businesses and sadness that I have to write this. I have 30 years of advanced scuba diving experience. I have scuba dived all over the world with many dive companies as well as solo. Today we chose a shore dive as my stepson has only been diving one year so wanted a nice simple dive before his first boat dive. we went on what was supposed to be a two tank shore dive but only did one tank which we were charged $155 each for.
His equipment was very unsafe and old. Mine didn’t even have a depth gauge. And my two dive buddies had air leaking from their tank connections. His wetsuits had holes in them and mine was full of ants which resulted in multiple bites.
When two people in our group were struggling he didn’t take time to help, eventually it was so bad they surfaced on their own. Devin just sent them back to shore without accompanying them or making sure they got back safely. The little girls fins didn’t fit and were too big. I offered to grab my extra from the car which were her size. Devin said “no that’s not needed once you see the fish you won’t care and if need be i will just drag you along” blowing her concerns off. She was a young child and recently certified and continued to struggle as her fins fell off. Her father’s mask strap kept popping off and filling with water. This ended their dive early. Devin ignored them when they brought this up before and after their dive. His response to the mask was “well that happens when they’re old”.
Our next day with a different dive shop included a two tank boat dive and was $15 cheaper and that included snacks and water.
I do not recommend this dive shop and don’t understand how Devin has so many good reviews. For the prices he charges, he could at least have his equipment in proper working condition.
He had his young daughter on the dive, who was very sweet, but kept digging handfuls of sand and throwing around which made for poor visibility at times. It seemed more like he was on a personal dive with his child than a dive...
Read moreMy experience with Banzai was AMAZING! Devin was our Dive Instructor and he made the whole thing so fun, relaxed, and professional!
I'm diving certified but haven't gone diving over a year so I figured doing the discovery/refresher course would be the best. There were 3 others in the group who had little experience in diving. Devin was very helpful through the whole process. He has a very chill but professional vibe that makes you very at ease. He took care of everything - helping you set up the gear and explaining what's going on so that all you really need to do is jump in the water and follow his instructions!
We did 2 dives that were both really cool. We saw sharks, sea turtles, eels, various fishes, and Devin even caught an octopus for us to observe closer (he let it free afterwards!). We all felt safe and had fun while down under. I think the best part was that Devin took pictures, and then sent them to us - for FREE! i got a super awesome pic with a sea turtle among other cool pics. Thanks Devin for capturing that moment!
My only quip i have was that as a certified diver looking for a refresher, I felt that I didn't get enough of a refresh on the technical stuff. Devin is so helpful that he sets up all your gear but it probably would have been good for me to practice how to set it up again. Although I can't complain much -- cause i basically didn't have to lift a finger until the diving actually begun!
I'd definitely recommend Banzai Divers Hawaii to anyone. I been on about 5 dives and this was one of my top experiences. If I go back to Honolulu i'd definitely dive with Devin again!
I bought the groupon for the discovery dive via groupon so it was a great deal. Note you can get the same deal from them directly - just contact them!
Note for those who are easily seasick, take some medication before. Both me and the other girl did not deal well while on the boat and both tossed our cookies. Don't let that deter you - being underwater was a...
Read moreI am Advanced Open Water Padi certified, and I went diving in Oahu at Sharks Cove in 2008, with another dive shop, and had a marvelous time. I recently returned to Oahu and tried to contact the same shop, but they were no longer in business. However, they referred me to Bonzai. Devin was responsive in his communication about the dive and showed up early. We had 3 in our party, who were first time divers. Devin and his helper were thorough in explaining everything. We got to the water and he was patient and unhurried. He personally assisted one diver, who was struggling with regulating pressure. We were down for 40 minutes and everyone was blown away with the experience. After the experience I was physically spent (53 and out of shape... Oh there's a shape, but it's round! LOL). When I had no energy to carry my tank back up to the truck, Devin saw me struggling and brought my water shoes from the shore to me, and carried the tank for me... WOW! Devin is a true gentleman, who cares for his clients. Amazing trip and I highly recommend Devin and his team of...
