I'll start by saying that this is a beautiful course. Some holes were challenging but the layout of the whole course was well constructed and maintained very well.
My friends and I (group of 8) started a monthly golf outing and chose WestWynd for a Saturday morning tee off. On the front 9 we were stalked by a Ranger for two holes, which seemed excessive and unnecessary so his presence was distracting. I understand that Rangers are there for a reason and I'm a firm believer that all courses need them. However, having someone following us around like we're doing something wrong and giving us looks was concerning.
By the time we were done with the second hole, he told us that we needed to wait for the peanut gallery ahead of us. The group ahead of us was a part of our group. For him to call our friends cheap and slow was insulting. He should have driven ahead to see that our other group was waiting for a group of two golfers who were taking more time than a group of four. We understand that courses have tee time reservations to follow and we do our best to keep up the pace as we try to enjoy ourselves and wait patiently for the group(s) ahead of us.
Our group ahead of us later said that the same man found a golf ball in the woods and threw it at them while they're trying to play just to tell them that "he found their lost ball". He didn't hand it over or even wait for them to finish. He threw a golf ball at them without even grabbing their attention and it wasn't even a ball they used. The color of the ball should have been a tell tale sign.
We didn't go to play this beautiful course for $60 just to be insulted. For a Ranger to treat us differently just comes to show that he was merely judging us as children rather than treating us as adults who have shown nothing but respect and golf etiquette. I have visited many golf courses and never experienced this hospitality. And after informing the manager on this matter all he could say was, "I'm sorry you had a bad experience".
There are many courses we can play and most are a further commute but WestWynd is a course that we'll never...
Read moreIt's a beautiful course and in great shape. The greens were well kept, rolled true, and the pace/speed of putts were very fair, not to fast. That being said, the course is very difficult for the average golfer. It is long, a lot of fairway and greenside bunkers (although they're very well kept), the rough was very long/thick, plus you have to hit over a lot of marsh or junk going into the greens and the greens are well protected. Also, their are some blind shots as well as a lot of native grass just off the edge of the fairways. Very minimal water to deal with but it comes into play a couple of times in the round. You better be a real good driver of the golf ball and be in the fairway. If you get just off the fairway you're in trouble. Pace of play was good for a mid afternoon round. Again, a beautiful course but very difficult and challenging. All courses have 1 or maybe 2 things that make them challenging, this course has 5 or 6. Personally, I wouldn't "choose" to play their again but if asked as part of a group I would go. I'm no Tiger Woods but I'm not Al Chervik either. I just think if you're a 15+ or higher handicapper you'll be happier elsewhere. Just my honest opinion. I would recommend putting in a hybrid tee option and lowering the first cut of rough. You smash a drive that falls 6 inches off the fairway and your ball is buried. There were times were we knew exactly where our ball landed and we couldn't find it. Bad enough that you have long thick rough but when you have native grass on top of it, 100's of bunkers, water, and you have to hit over marsh, etc. with heavily protected greens it becomes a...
Read moreThere is a reason why there are so many open tee times when you check WestWynd. They miss the mark here. All the reviews you have read about WestWynd are fairly accurate. On the plus side, it was a nice course, fun to play, great layout, and a challenge. But other than that, most of my review is negative. First, I just don’t understand why they don’t have any water on the course. It was a hot, humid day when I played and the 3 times I saw the beverage cart just doesn’t cut it. In all the years I’ve played golf (including Oakland Hills and Firestone) there is water on the course. Second, no half-way house. With a 10 am tee time, you play through lunch and yes, people get hungry. A pretty big surprise is there is zero sand in the traps, and there are a lot of traps on the course. I found a few, and I was hitting off dirt like some low end city course. Lastly, the people were not very pleasant. The starter was an idiot. We were a two-some and they paired us with another two-some, even though there was no one ahead of us for 3 holes and no one behind us for at least 3 openings. It was a very wide open starter sheet, like most days at WestWynd. Then it turns out all the later groups were twosomes or threesomes. So you guessed it, they caught up to us and then the ranger started giving us a hard time. Oh, and by the way, I can care less about brick paver cart paths. Golfers would rather have water to drink, food to eat, sand in the traps and pleasant people to deal with. All in...
