The lower trail is wide and mostly gravel dirt, with little shade. Once in the canyon you get some shade, and the little creek helps cool it some. During high water run off the creek will flood the upper trail once you pass the Bonneville Shore Trail. The upper trail also get rockier with come narrow spots having slick stones due to high foot traffic wear. Things to watch for: There is poison ivy in the canyon so watch your kids and dogs. Snowshoeing, ice climbing, cool canyon hammocking and flower watching. The trail is a little steep once in the canyon and would be rated difficult. But it's worth the climb. Wear some sturdy shoes and take some water and snacks. Trekking poles are very useful. We have cell reception through much of the canyon in case of an emergency. Read moreThis is a challenging hike with boulders on the trail and the stream also crosses the trail a few times. Your knees will feel it going up and down. That said, this is a beautiful destination. The misty atmosphere below the falls is refreshing and magical. Watch out for rattlesnakes as they are often seen on this trail.
