Are you currently in the hospital with your head spinning and unsure which rehabilitation to choose!? I know that’s where I was just a few weeks ago. Tomorrow I discharge from Oklahoma City Rehabilitation Hospital with a gang of cheerleaders, friends, a plethora of information and all the tools necessary to go home safely. I know if you’re in the hospital you want to know the real details. The food is wonderful and the dining staff is so accommodating they will take requests. The rooms are private and absolutely beautiful. You’ve got a huge window, spacious bathroom and a LARGE television to relax in your downtime. If you’re anything like me, I really love my dog. I’ve been hospitalized since August 30th and have just missed him so much! Guess what?! Even your fur-babies can visit as long as they’re current on their shots! It was soo special and boosted my mood immediately! There is plenty of places to visit family including a great area with vending machines, tables, microwaves and a TV. My family and I loved this area shared homemade family meals, decorated pumpkins and had a family pizza night! The staff is absolutely INCREDIBLE! Every department is a part of your journey. I had some pretty incredible nurses who made stayed on top of my pain control which set me up for therapy. Day nurses Katie and Shelly were pretty awesome. The techs who stood out most to me were Starla and Donna as they acted like moms to me. Making sure I had everything I need checking on me constantly. At night Erin, Shayla and Trudy were on top of not only pain control but made sure I got the rest I needed so I was ready in the morning for the therapy team. Charge nurse Nic stayed on top of things to and if you needed anything he’d get it done. I saw at LEAST one doctor a day but usually more. Dr Hussein, his PA, Dr Kumar and Dr Nachimuthu didn’t miss a beat! Dr Rooks with neurology is really down to earth and is the first neurologist I’ve met who really sits down and takes the time to explain things. When you step into the BEAUTIFUL gym for PT/OT get comfortable, push yourself and ask to try some of their really cool technology! There is a whole team ready to show you how to get stronger, feel better and some really cool tricks! They’ve got a really great team dynamic going and on most days someone has music going. Natalie is my OT angel, she really knows how to make you feel better on those crummy days. She’s a master hair braider and is always willing. Little does she know getting your hair braided and out of the way makes you feel so much better. She’s OT, but I think she’s a counselor and doesn’t know it too. She listens and always helps navigate your concerns. Kirt was so much fun to do PT with he always pushed me but because I was enjoying it and having fun it never felt like I was being pushed. David got me situated in my new legs aka “wheels” he should definitely be the dedicated power wheelchair instructor. I won’t ever forget to tilt my chair because he was always catching me in the halls! Khea will push you to help you make your PT goals but she also listens well and won’t push you if you’re not ready. I always wanted to be pushed. Her true super power is authentic kindness. She so kindly gave me a wheelchair that’ll fit just to my bathroom. She knew this was a worry of mine going home and she was able to kill that worry with her kindness! Lynn is so sweet and such a sweetheart. I was so worried about how I can no longer write how I used too. She printed me all kinds of practice and made me some therapeutic hand putty to help. Some other special therapy team members I won’t forget include Hunter and Tyler. Leah my case manager has been working tirelessly to make sure I’m not just being discharged. Instead she made sure I had all the tools needed at home, set up home health care and made sure some of my own concerns were addressed. If you are looking for a rehabilitation hospital you’ve found the best one. You can pick OKC Rehabilitation Hospital and rest easy knowing you picked...
Read moreThis past week was my second inpatient stay at Oklahoma City Rehabilitation Hospital. The hospital is all around remarkable. From housekeeping all the way up to nursing care and therapies, I doubt there is any facility in Oklahoma that can come close to the care they provide. All of the therapy sessions are targeted for your needs. The therapy teams meet often to discuss your progress, always keeping your goals and theirs in mind for a successful recovery. Every person I interacted with had a positive attitude, which encourages patients to try their best in every day activities. They all become more like family than people meeting your medical needs. The doctors, nurses, aides and therapists are the best! Those whom I will miss are: Molly for always going above and beyond as my case manager. My best interests were always at the forefront. You never gave up on finding a skilled nursing facility for me upon discharge. I was emotional at times due to steroid infusions, but you understood and were so caring about me and what was best. Kirsten (Speech Therapy), you provided so many tips and skills to help with my stutters. I can now go out confidently using my new knowledge! Amy and Malissa (Physical Therapy), Wow! Your patience, encouragement and vast knowledge of how MS affects the body was impressive. You knew what therapies would be most beneficial and when to slow the pace down due to cues you could read in my body. Shelby (PT), God gifted you with so many talents...Faith, Healing, Compassion and Encouragement. May you continue to bless those in your care. You are very special. Lisa, who made occupational therapy enjoyable and was alert to change the exercises around to manage stress and fatigue. I was always excited to see Lisa at my door. Harley in PT with an awesome music playlist. He made doing therapy much more fun having music on in the gym. Although a huge Sooner fan, he will give the same attention to Poke fans as well. And Harley, you really need to add the band “Chicago” to your rotation of music. Kaja, my night nurse whose sweet voice bought a soothing calmness to my spirit. Spencer, my night aide..never lose sight of your goals. You will be a wonderful trauma surgeon. “There are better things ahead than any we leave behind.” C.S. Lewis Tiffany, oh Tiffany. My nurses’ aide who always brought joy and a smile into my room. She made me laugh on days I was down, and was so funny with her happy dances. You really need to be cloned. Life is good when you enter a room. I will miss you. Dr. Hussein, the most personable, caring and “on your team” physician one could ever hope to have treating you. He takes time with each patient and listens. I dare you to find anyone better, unless it is Dr. Rooks below who equals Dr. Hussein. Dr. Rooks, (the facility’s neurologist) who also came into the room with a smile, a kind word and truly cares for one’s needs. He would listen to my concerns, answered questions and made me feel secure in how my MS was addressed.

Read moreThis place is horrible...I only lasted from Oct.4 through Oct.6, 2023. First day I was there, for breakfast, without asking about my dietary needs, I was brought an English muffin and scrambled eggs with slices of very thin ham. It almost looked like salmon mixed into the eggs. I called to find out what the meat was and someone from cafeteria came, I asked her what that was? Her answer was, Ham. I told her that I don't eat pork products and she copped an attitude and told me to eat it, it's not going to kill me! She took the tray and I asked her to bring me a hot cup of coffee, she miffed at me and said she would come back...she never came back with coffee. Then another man came in with some scrambled eggs, no toast, nothing and I took a bite of the eggs and they were very, very salty! I did not eat them because my BP was very high and that would not be good for me...I didn't eat breakfast that day. A few minutes later a male nurse came in rubbing his belly and saying, "Oh boy, you don't know what you're missing by not eating bacon, ham, shrimp, etc!
I asked him, who did he think he was talking to??? I am a patient! You have no right to talk to me that way!!! He left. At night, I was still up because I had called the nurses station so they could put the back of my bed down and prop up my leg. I called them at about 11pm and no one came. Then, I saw a dark man's face opening my door and he was surprised that I was awake. It was twelve midnight (12:00am) and I asked him who he was and he said, Dr. Hussain...I asked him, Why are you coming to see me at 12 midnight!!!??? I told him I had been waiting for a nurse tech to come and put the rail up so that I could raise of lower the bed myself...He did it for me.
The last night I woke up at 4:43am to the sounds of an elderly lady crying, Help Me, Somebody Help me! Please...somebody help me...That went on for 30 minutes. I thought I was dreaming but, I wasn't. I called nurse's station and it took about 7 minutes for them to answer my call. I told the girl that there was someone crying for help. She said that no, they didn't hear anything. I told her, "How can you not hear her cries??? Five minutes later, I didn't hear that lady...They probably sedated her?
I have reported this place to my insurance and to my surgeon and hopefully they will take action. As for Stacie CEO, I had my conversation with her and everything that was going on in this hospital. There is definitely a disconnect with your nurses and proper patient care. I had the best PT people but, the rest was bad nursing and a doctor that is being stretched from OKC, to Lawton and Texas! To those of you who read this and think that it's not that bad...take my word for it, take your loved one somewhere else and be a person who keeps an eye on what is going on with...
