Club 27 is the restaurant in the new clubhouse at the Sykes/Lady Overland Park Golf Club. At this writing, it is open to limited reservations through June 2, giving the management and staff kind of a shake down cruise to get everything in order.
This place is great! You must try it!!
The venue itself was very nicely planned and decorated, with the dining room, bar and patio overlooking the South Course's 1st tee and the green for the 3rd hole. The view is wonderful and I can only imagine how pretty it will be as the seasons change, especially in the fall as the trees change colors. Even in the winter, though, I can already imagine having winter displays of a lighted Santa on the 1st tee with a sleigh led by Rudolf as his golf cart.
So, the venue is very comfortable, understatedly elegant, with a couple of fireplaces, and several big screen TVs. The back of the bar opens up to the outside when the weather permits. Of course, being at a public golf course, the atmosphere is casual.
The food is outstanding. The executive chef, Steve McCall, has put together a very interesting menu. We have already dined here twice, ordering different things. So far, there isn't a bad dish on the menu.
We've had the toasted ravioli, jerk chicken kabobs, carnitas poutine, (carnitas on waffle french fries) and short rib slider appetizers. They are all wonderful. Be careful with the carnitas dish, though, as it is substantial, easily shared by 4 people. Also, you can easily make a meal out of combination of appetizers & salad.
The Caesar and strawberry spinach salads are both very nice. When ordering an entree, you get their "small" sizes of those, but be warned. As with the carnitas appetizer, the side Caesar salad is very generous.
The Tomahawk Pork Chop, Pan Seared Garlic Lemon Chicken Breast, Salmon, and build your own mac & cheese dishes are all delicious. The chef has brought his experience from New Mexico to add some bite to some dishes, like the pork chops. Very interesting!!
On the dessert side, they have what they call small sized desserts. We've had the key lime pie and the tiramisu. They aren't as small as you'd think, though, being generously portioned and shared by two if you want to go light.
The prices are quite reasonable. Given the quality of the food, this place is a value. We had bills in excess of $100, but each time we've appetizers, drinks and dessert. You might think that's high for a public golf course, but this place is worth it! Club 27 can legitimately count places like J Gilberts and The Bristol as its competition, but it's not as expensive.
Finally, the service is excellent. Everyone is very attentive, personable, professional, but not obtrusive. Again, you gotta try this place. No, I don't work there. I'm just a long time Overland Park duffer who plays this course and...
Read moreGolf course is good, greens are always in great shape. I'm operating under the assumption that they have a bunker renovation on the horizon, because they've completely let them go.
My main complaint was something I witnessed in the clubhouse. While I was checking in, the lady next to me had brought her daughter in for the summer youth on course program. They were running slightly late for their tee time and the lady behind the counter could not have been ruder to them. She made both mother and daughter feel awful for running behind and would not let it go. I'm not a confrontational person, but it took every part of me to hold back from speaking up and telling the attendant to give it a rest.
In my eyes this is a major reason why golf is still seen as intimidating, elitist, and scary for kids getting into the game. I'm fairly certain that girl will be intimidated going into the clubhouse in the future. I've worked at several golf courses throughout high school and college and I know that players running behind causes major headaches, especially at a course as busy as Sykes Lady. A simple comment "hey, you're a little bit late, you'll have to meet your group on #2" would have done the trick.
People, especially young families are extremely busy and sometimes parents are doing their best to get their kids to their activities on time. I'd just ask that this employee has a little more grace towards a mom who is trying to get her daughter involved...
Read moreExtremely disappointed in this course. Me and three friends made a tee time for 6:45pm. We paid for 3 riders, and 1 ride along. We also purchased a large bucket of balls for the driving range, as we arrived early. As we got our carts, the man in the cart area made a comment questioning if we had a tee time, in which he was extremely rude in his tone. We explained we had a 6:45 time, and would play as much as we could & return our cart promptly before they close. After going to the range, we went to the course for our tee time (@6:45) and the man questioned us if we paid/paid for our riders and once again made comments about our 6:45 tee time (he seemed inconvenienced). He told us that we were suppose to arrive ten minutes early, which we were not aware of (we arrived at our tee time). We had golfed here another time before, and not been made aware of it- had we known we would have made sure to! Both these men were rude and unwelcoming. It felt like they were talking down to us. I have been to plenty of courses and have worked at 2 different courses, and never encountered such rude staff. Also, if a 6:45pm tee time is such an issue,...
