I absolutely love the foggy weather in Pacifica/HMB/Daly City. You can see the billowing fog, making this a great place to visit to get away from the hot weather everywhere else in the Bay.
As many have shared, parking is TOUGH here. There are about 10 spots in the north lot, and probably about 15+ in the southern lots. We got super lucky finding parking during a brief lull in visitors.
This is a super quick walk and doesn't require any special gear or clothes! Bring a jacket or windbreaker for the occasional wind and sprinkles of rain. Also consider bringing a mask if you're sensitive to the smell of the oceanside.
Bring a few quarters if you want to use the lookout viewers! I unfortunately didn't, but would have loved to zoom in on Egg Rock to see the Common Murres. The informational signs along the path share lots of great history and trivia about the area and the trail itself. Be sure to check out Graffiti Hill just south of the southern end of the trail! Lots of benches to rest up and gaze off into the waters.
There were plenty of interesting plants and rock formations along the trail. The tunnel itself is super fascinating to drive...
Read moreI recently had knee replacement surgery and had never been on this portion of the paved trail. It was an up-slope walk to the top where there was an over-look with benches to look out on the Pacific Ocean. Nature abounds on either side of the trail as ravens and vultures were checking me out from a high perch or in the sky. The hills are still eroding on either side, but the roadbed is protected by K-Rail, so the scree stops behind it. One can see the plants growing along the sides of the trail, up steep slopes. There are public restrooms near the parking lot, and trash bins, plus baggies for pet excrement, despite that, one could still see some poop along the trail, including some bagged poop that someone was too lazy to pack out with...
Read moreSpectacular views, very easy hike even for kids. North parking area has about fifteen parking spaces and south parking area has about twenty. Arrive early! I arrived around 9am on a Tuesday and there was plenty of parking available in the North lot. North and South lots both have restrooms and they are super clean. It’s a 9% grade from north to south, downhill going south and uphill going north. Entire path is paved as it is the old Highway 1 before the tunnels opened. Several viewing areas along the way with benches. Super windy, particularly on the north end near the summit, bring a light jacket even if it is warm at the parking area. Views are...
